Recitation by qari Mishary Rashid aal- Afasy ,

My personal interpretation of the opening verses of this surah is that they draw attention to heavenly bodies that float in space, in continuous motion, at various speeds, but without engines to propel them or navigators to direct then on their respective assigned orbits.

By those who drag forth to destruction, (1) By the meteors rushing, (2) By the lone stars floating, (3) By the angels hastening, (4) And those who govern the event, (5)

However, this whole complex system is destined to come to an abrupt end,, and all these phenomena will disappear. When will that happen? On the day when the first trump resoundeth. (6)And the second followeth it, "(7)

The huge cataclysmic quake will bring everything tumbling down. The whole world will be turned upside down and people's hearts will be filled with horror and anticipation. The unbelievers will then ask in bewilderment: "[.Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state (10) Even after we are crumbled bones?  "" (11)

Skeptics in this life  doubt the warnings of God's prophets and messengers They deny that the dead shall ever be brought back ti life. They would say:. "  They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding. "(12)

They gradually begin to realize that their denial and lack of faith had been an unwise preparation for such a momentous event. The surah asserts:Surely it will need but one shout, (13) And lo! they will be awakened." (14)

Twentieth century atheists are not really very much different than sixth-century pagan Arabs who had a purely material;istic and existentialist view of life: People are born, they die and are buried. There is no more life than that! What would they say or do when they are brought to life again?

The surah goes on to cite the Pharaoh as an example of intransigence and arrogance. The Pharaoh is a prototype of men who can be found in all walks of life. They are usually selfish, ruthless megalomaniacs who have no concept if justice and who would not flinch from violating the rights of others.

The surah then turns to address the whole of mankind, questioning their callousness and lack of faith in God. It ask:Are ye the harder to create, or is the heaven that He built? (27) He raised the height thereof and ordered it....  "(28). Compared to other creatures, man is small and weak; he should know better than to deny the truth or act like a tyrant. Man needs to be concious of God and to seek to earn His mercy and forgiveness. The power man has been given over other creatures ought to be harnessed and employed in the service of God and to praise and thank Him.

Towards the end the surah returns to the opening theme: The resurrection and punishment and reward, pointing out clearly that this life is but a precursor to the life to come.

It says:But when the great disaster cometh, (34) The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour, (35) And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth, " (36). On that day, mankind will be divided into two groups: those who succumbed to their weaknesses and desires and those who submitted to God and served His cause. The surah explains:

Then, as for him who rebelled (37) And chose the life of the world, (38) Lo! hell will be his home. (39) But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust, (40) Lo! the Garden will be his home. (41)

Despite their denials, skeptics have the audacity to be curious about the time when the final Hour might arrive. The surah says: They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port? (42) Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof? (43) Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the last hour.....
