Surah Ghafir....ayat 21 to ayat 23

friends, dato and tansri,

go  and travel
see the world
see pharaoh, ad, thamud, saddam hussien and trump
....and come back stronger in faith and purpose.

Have they not travelled in the land to see the nature of the consequence for those who disbelieved before them? They were mightier than these in power and (in the) traces (which they left behind them) in the earth. Yet Allah seized them for their sins, and they had no protector from Allah. (21) That was because their messengers kept bringing them clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) but they disbelieved; so Allah seized them. Lo! He is Strong, severe in punishment. (22) And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations and a clear warrant (23)

Surah Ghafir.....ayat 18 to ayat 20

friends , dato and tansri,

Warn them (O Muhammad) of the Day of the approaching (doom), when the hearts will be choking the throats, (when) there will be no friend for the wrong-doers, nor any intercessor who will be heard. (18) He knoweth the traitor of the eyes, and that which the bosoms hide. (19) Allah judgeth with truth, while those to whom they cry instead of Him judge not at all. Lo! Allah, He is the Hearer, the Seer. (20)

[ translation by pickthal ]

One day, an Arab man come to Prophet Muhammad [ pbuh ], and asked,

“Now, tell me of the Last Hour,” asked the man
The Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “The one asked knows no more of it than the one asking.”
“Then tell me about its signs,” said the man
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “That slave women give birth to their mistresses; and that you see barefoot, unclothed, beginning shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings

Then the visitor left, and I waited a long time. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, “Do you know, Omar, who the questioner was?” I replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”He said (Allah bless him and give him peace), “It was Jibril. He came to you to teach you your religion
.

[ a tradition as narrated by saidina umar ........ muslim ]

but for you and me , my friends, mostly all in our 50's and 60's, our 'hour' may just be tomorrow!

your excellency, what have you done to be ready for the 'hour'?
you think your prayer and zikr  and your fasting are enough to get you through...?
when you can continue to lend support, active and passive, for outright bad character and kufr amongst  you and your leadership?

Surah Ghafir ......ayat 14 to ayat 17

friends , dato and tansri,

Therefor (O believers) pray unto Allah, making religion pure for Him (only), however much the disbelievers be averse - (14) The Exalter of Ranks, the Lord of the Throne. He casteth the Spirit of His command upon whom He will of His slaves, that He may warn of the Day of Meeting, (15) The day when they come forth, nothing of them being hidden from Allah. Whose is the Sovereignty this day? It is Allah's, the One, the Almighty. (16) This day is each soul requited that which it hath earned; no wrong (is done) this day. Lo! Allah is swift at reckoning. (17)
[ translation by pickthal  ]

i find some solace here particularly as a raayat of this, now beleaguered nation, hold ransomed by a group of leaders who have not an ounce of shame and moral integrity  and ugama, who are just  like ostriches burying their heads in the sand with their bottoms showing.

ayat 15 and 16 particularly give me this solace.
for now they can hide behind a very quiet well fed upper house who obviously can do much better that what the are doing now  and show their relevance in this century where elsewhere the rest have but lost all their relevance; an emasculated judiciary; an impotent and non existent press; a 'kang kong'  and 'cari makan' academia , ulama and business who's who; and a totally cowed electorate.

on 'yaumu'talak' they will  all be naked and judged in fairness.
they may escape justice on earth but on that day there is no way they may escape justice......, not even those who support these kufr amongst the marheins.......ameen.

Warn them of the Day of the approaching (doom), when the hearts will be choking the throats, (when) there will be no friend for the wrong-doers, nor any intercessor who will be heard.[ 18 ]

it is better to have 'angina' now in this world than 'angina' on 'yaumu'talak', the day of mutual meeting .

Masha allah!

Surah Ghafir....ayat 11 to ayat 13

friends, dato and tansri,

these following ayat do not require commentary.
all still brimstone and fire.

They say: Our Lord! Twice hast Thou made us die, and twice hast Thou made us live. Now we confess our sins. Is there any way to go out? (11) (It is said unto them): This is (your plight) because, when Allah only was invoked, ye disbelieved, but when some partner was ascribed to Him ye were believing. But the command belongeth only to Allah, the Sublime, the Majestic. (12) He it is Who showeth you His portents, and sendeth down for you provision from the sky. None payeth heed save him who turneth (unto Him) repentant. (13)

[ translation by pickthal ]

ayat 12 give me special relevance today.
i used to wonder, and have pity of my neighbour, who is a trinitarian. there i am , with full knowledge, but am holding back due to political correctness. it is not just pity  i felt guilty as well.

just the other day , a cardiological colleague of mine message back to me to stop sending her this ' tafseer'. she told me that she don't need islam.
she is happy with remaining an agnostic.

a year back one ex- ksu, and another, a g25 material ,wrote the same to me.
unlike my colleague, these two are prominent malay bureacrats, who officially claimed to be muslims, but privately are non practicing.
agnosticism is fairly rampant in the higher echelon of power, only common people don't know that.

listening to prof halis commentary today of ayat 12, i feel relieved.
........they know, in their full life they know islam, somehow, but they choose not to follow out of their own free will.

ya mukalibal qulub,
firm my heart in your din
ya mukalibal qulub
firm my heart in your obedience.

ya rahman, ya rahim, ya malik, ya zal jalaliwalikram, ya mutakabbir
give me goodness in this life and the hereafter.
keep me away from your hell fire!
give me husnul khatimah
keep me away from suul khatimah

Surah Ghafir.......ayat 8 to ayat 10

recitation, full surah by qari shaykh abdul basit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhNI5xUIDlw

friends, dato and tansri,

Our Lord! And make them enter the Gardens of Eden which thou hast promised them, with such of their fathers and their wives and their descendants as do right. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Mighty, the Wise. (8) And ward off from them ill-deeds; and he from whom Thou wardest off ill-deeds that day, him verily hast Thou taken into mercy. That is the supreme triumph. (9) Lo! (on that day) those who disbelieve are informed by proclamation: Verily Allah's abhorrence is more terrible than your abhorrence one of another, when ye were called unto the faith but did refuse. (10))  They say: Our Lord! Twice hast Thou made us die, and twice hast Thou made us live. Now we confess our sins. Is there any way to go out? (11]

[ translation by pickthal  ]

ayat 10 is full of 'brimstone and fire'.
my friends have put it to me in an earlier discourse that i am full of 'brimstone and fire', lately.

coincidentally , currently and just before this we are at the makkan stage of the revelations.
surah yasin, surah az zumar and surah ghafir are all makkan surah.
full of 'brimstone and fire'.
allah does not mince HIS words and abhorrence for HIS detractors.

supergedebe and gangsters like hamzah and umar became the epitome of faith and righteousness of their time, changed by verses like these!

some people misunderstood 'liberalism in islam to mean, as the permissibility to do everything that they think are right from their limited perspectives...

for example irsayd manji cannot have same sex marriage in hawaii and still claim to be muslim, let alone write a book on islam .

not pray at all and still be muslims etc etc and etc.

think that all ugama are the same...masyaallah!

insists, as some of our sisters in islam locally here do, that muftis discuss with them first before coming up with fatwas. who do the think they are? great scholars!

tolerate utter nonsense in governance and abscond with billion ringgit and still insist we are still great followers of  the ugama. the perpetrator and his die hard followers have no clear understanding of their ugama. they have debased their ugama to a level it has become the laughing stock of the rest of the world! ugama , at the end of the day , the prostration, the prayers the zikr, the ablution.....is all about good characters.
what kind of character is this?

etc, etc etc and etc.

what i understand  by liberalism in islam is that one can go by the day just saying 10 to 20 selawat on the nabi, or he can say selawat the whole day and night.
one can just pray and do 33 subhanallah, al hamdullillah 33 and allahuakabar , 33 times or one can be in continuos 'witnessing of allah the whole day and night'

one can do a little  zikr, or be in zikrullah day and night, even while sleeping.

one can elect to be just average, below average, or one can aim for excellence or super excellence [ muqarrabin ]

one is free to choose one's level.
one can just choose to be a 'school prefect' or one can choose to be a 'lover', like rumi or ibnu arabi
.....or part of the large spectrum in between , where most of us posited ourselves.
it is akin to just from  39.99 british pound at harrod.
anything lower, you get it from selfridges or better still at smithfield meat market in east london

beyond islam, these  so called liberals must find their own world and universe.
go find your own universe if you want to live by your own rules and regulations!

Surah Ghafir.........Prologue,... ayat 1 to ayat 7

friends, dato and tansri,

Surah Ghafir
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) The revelation of the Scripture is from Allah, the Mighty, the Knower, (2) The Forgiver of sin, the Accepter of repentance, the Stern in punishment, the Bountiful. There is no God save Him. Unto Him is the journeying. (3) None argue concerning the revelations of Allah save those who disbelieve, so let not their turn of fortune in the land deceive thee (O Muhammad). (4) The folk of Noah and the factions after them denied (their messengers) before these, and every nation purposed to seize their messenger and argued falsely, (thinking) thereby to refute the Truth. Then I seized them, and how (awful) was My punishment. (5) Thus was the word of thy Lord concerning those who disbelieve fulfilled: that they are owners of the Fire. (6) Those who bear the Throne, and all who are round about it, hymn the praises of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who believe (saying): Our Lord! Thou comprehendest all things in mercy and knowledge, therefor forgive those who repent and follow Thy way. Ward off from them the punishment of hell. (7)

[ translation by pickthal  ]

The folk of Noah and the factions after them denied (their messengers) before these, and every nation purposed to seize their messenger and argued falsely, (thinking) thereby to refute the Truth.

how very true indeed!
mankind, up to this 21st century are still bickering about  'ugama'
from noah's time, to abu jahal, abu lahab, charles darwin, stephen hawkings, richard dawkin, christopher hitchens.
all are saying NO to ugama.
and we have minions the likes of isahak, hamzah, ali, john and puthuceary, irshad manji etc and etc echoing the same song.
how tragic!

before coming to surah ghafir , i was half worried that there would not be a decent commentary in the utube but lo and behold i stumbled upon a good one coming from turkey.
assoc prof halis aydemir may not have the linguistic dexterity of nouman ali khan or shaykh tawfique chowdhury.
linguistic dexterity aside, in the science of tafseer , it is the content that matter.

friends, dato and tansri,

from ayat 21 onwards, allah reveals an interesting conversation between mu'min and pharaoh.
mu'min was an important inner member of pharaoh family who comprehended moses' message.

there are many like mu'min, scattered through the sand of time, marginalised by people of his time. in pharaoh's time people like mu'min would be incarcerated in prison or worse still hung on the stakes or burned.

in modern times such as now, most times their travels are limited, their voice stifled, and they are applied labels. oftentimes, ISA-ed.

rarely if they are too talented and able to read the kuffar's mind, they got him droned!
as obama did to shaykh anwar al awlaki.

the logistics, the paperwork, the rationalization, the media work, the legalities, and the modus operandi can all be organized.

Before We Move On To Surah Ghafir...........TJ Winter On Tassawuf and Traditional Islam

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQWNeGyRu0k
[ tj winter aka abdal hakim murad on tassawwuf in islam ]

friends, dato  and tansri,

i love shaykh abdal qadir al jilani's futuh al ghaib [ revelations of the unseen ], or his  secrets of secrets; ibnu arabi's very short almost sublime treatise on journey to the lord of power;  very difficult to readibnu athaillah's al hikam; jalaluddin rumi's beautiful  and ecstatic mathnawi; and imam alghazali's very concise and sharp, mukasyafatul  qulub [ exposition of the hearts ]

where does that puts me?

my salafi/wahabbi friends will say 'omg al doktor!  you are threading dangerous waters.....full of  gharib and dhaif hadiths...these are bidaah literatures. certainly nabi did'nt write these......it is not in  muslim or bukhari!...don't waste your time.
read only ibnu qayyim and ibnu taymiah..... these two have all done the homework for you!
it is safer for your aqidah!'.

mashaallah these fully blinkered people!
they use one ruler for everyone on earth......and only two tok gurus!

ok, to be fair to them, not two but three to be exact.
in their scheme of things, the rest of scholars and tok gurus can go and fly kites !

forgetting that the 'islamic tree' is composed of a summation and collection of 1450 years of hundreds, if not thousand of tok gurus and allah-enlightened and gifted souls, with tauhid and taqwa uppermost in their minds.

this over simplification and 'blinkering' of islamic history and scholarship reminded me of pol pot of the khmer rouge infamy, who , rubbished several thousand years of the old cambodian empire's history , and named 1975 as 'year zero' for cambodians!

theirs is one way of looking at things......the 'school prefect' way...the 'pea brained' way, in my own estimation.
if you want to enjoy your ugama, love the creator and his creations, and uppermost, love his nabi, there are other ways to 'skin the proverbial cat'

listening to dr tj winter aka abdal hakim murad very sophisticated and nuanced lecture gives me a lot of solace.
a breath of fresh air.
a long one , i must warn you, but very 'cerebral' and profound.

Nikhowk,  my sincere and heartfelt congratulations on your most refreshing call for a broadening of the boundaries of spiritual and intellectual inspiration, discourse and sources. For quite a while i was beginning to despair that in your anger, frustration and exasperation with and over the ummah and our current lot, that you have lost sight of the broader perspective. As you flail and thrash about in your angst, (much of which I share, by the way) I was beginning to wonder if nikhowk has not lost it, and whether I should just look away. Therefore, your 'hot from the stove' summation was most welcomed and goes a long way to restore the respect that i hold for your sincere and painstaking endeavours to share your broad and deep reading and research. Please accept my sincere apologies for allowing the doubts to occasionally rise.

Salam and regards,

i am most humbled by your sincerity and honesty tan sri.
i must apologise that in my writings, oftentimes i came across as 'that demonic' figure full of fire and barbs!
indeed there is still some 'rumi' in me that occasionally emerge truimphant.

i still can respect the rhyme and reason why the salafis/wahabbis [ for want of better terms ] take their position and austere narrative to life and faith, even though my heart veers nearer to the azhari/al ghazalian narrative of life.

it is much kinder and softer

but having said that, i will definitely have an epileptic fit if my youngest daughter come back one day and tell me she now subscribes to siti kassim, amina wadud or irshad manji brand of islam.
...[ and by the way, for those sis type of people still fighting to have manji's book un-banned in malaysia, irshad just got married last to her new found girlfriend, in hawaii...that is her brand of liberty in islam! ].
even sisters of islam type of liberalism will cause some degree of minor convulsion in my household.

allah forbids insyaallah.

your sincerely,

dr nik howk

ps:

i enjoy rumi and occasionally listen to prof coleman barks interpretation of his poems.
barks , a retired linguistic professor in athens, usa become world famous because of rumi.
to the west he is the world's expert on rumi.
but omg!
he has been very successful in totally 'de-islamizing' rumi.
rumi grew up in the millieu of the koran, traditions and syariah.
you would not be able to recognize all these in the 'modern' rumi.
in fact, one could well be pardoned to think that rumi was christian!
an example of christian/jewish hegemony even in traditional literature.

which brings me to remind you guys about taqwa, and saidina umar's working definition of taqwa:
" taqwa is like walking or rather tip toeing oneself carefully on a path full of thorns and low lying branches.."

in 2017, we have to take that kind of approach in our ugama.
too many ' thorns' and too many 'low lying branches' out there in our daily lives, from seemingly unexpected quarters!

in malaysia now , off hand if you must ask me what are the obvious thorns ...individuals like farouk peru  et al and g25 are one of them. it is not a new animal.'it is just a sanitized unisex version of sis, under the very same leadership.

to be blunt, tan sri, too many wolves in sheep clothing!
and that tansri, is the very basis why salafism and wahabism are popular amongst our youth of today. young people like short cuts....understandably they want their ugama to be safe from all these nonsense!

......the way out is not easy for the present generation.
it is back to ilm , ilm ilm and ilm.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlQaxwBIxE8

[ come , enjoy rumi, my apology though...this a sanitized version by coleman barks....]

But please do not apologise for it. Our characteristics are what make us individuals and interesting. I may not agree with much of what you say, but l am glad there are individuals like Doc Nik around. Or the world would be a dull place indeed.

unfortunately dato we currently are at the makkan surah part of the kor'an in our tafseer after a long journey of almost 5 years.
you are a late student of sort, so i must apologise.

the makkan variety [ az zumar, yasin, etc and etc ] are all fire and brimstone i am afraid.
it is mostly ''you are with me or you are bound for hell'' kind of stuff.....

stuff that can turn one time chief gedebe and gangsters likes of hamzah and umar into giants of their time and epitome of faith.
we have to look at the  qur'an from that angle as well.

i am glad, you too felt the 'heat'.

[ final commentary on surah az zumar by shaykh tawfique chowdhury ]

yes your excellency!,

allah may accept your 'taubatan nasuha'.
but your crime is not just about you breaking his rules
your 'crime' impact onto some 27 million souls!
on yaumiddin, will they accept your plea?

And the trumpet is blown, and all who are in the heavens and all who are in the earth swoon away, save him whom Allah willeth. Then it is blown a second time, and behold them standing waiting! (68) And the earth shineth with the light of her Lord, and the Book is set up, and the prophets and the witnesses are brought, and it is judged between them with truth, and they are not wronged. (69) And each soul is paid in full for what it did. And He is best aware of what they do. (70) And those who disbelieve are driven unto hell in troops till, when they reach it and the gates thereof are opened, and the warders thereof say unto them: Came there not unto you messengers of your own, reciting unto you the revelations of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this your Day? They say: Yea, verily. But the word of doom of disbelievers is fulfilled. (71) It is said (unto them): Enter ye the gates of hell to dwell therein. Thus hapless is the journey's end of the scorners. (72) And those who keep their duty to their Lord are driven unto the Garden in troops till, when they reach it, and the gates thereof are opened, and the warders thereof say unto them: Peace be unto you! Ye are good, so enter ye (the Garden of delight), to dwell therein; (73) They say: Praise be to Allah, Who hath fulfilled His promise unto us and hath made us inherit the land, sojourning in the Garden where we will! So bounteous is the wage of workers. (74) And thou (O Muhammad) seest the angels thronging round the Throne, hymning the praises of their Lord. And they are judged aright. And it is said: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds! (75)

Surah az Zumar........ayat 53 to ayat 67

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UVHzfPSe7M&t=30s

[ commentary by shaykh tawfique chowdhury  ]

friends, dato and tansri,

Say: O My slaves who have been prodigal to their own hurt! Despair not of the mercy of Allah, Who forgiveth all sins. Lo! He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. (53) Turn unto your Lord repentant, and surrender unto Him, before there come unto you the doom, when ye cannot be helped. (54) And follow the better (guidance) of that which is revealed unto you from your Lord, before the doom cometh on you suddenly when ye know not, (55) Lest any soul should say: Alas, my grief that I was unmindful of Allah, and I was indeed among the scoffers! (56) Or should say: If Allah had but guided me I should have been among the dutiful! (57) Or should say, when it seeth the doom: Oh, that I had but a second chance that I might be among the righteous! (58) (But now the answer will be): Nay, for My revelations came unto thee, but thou didst deny them and wast scornful and wast among the disbelievers. (59) And on the Day of Resurrection thou (Muhammad) seest those who lied concerning Allah with their faces blackened. Is not the home of the scorners in hell? (60) And Allah delivereth those who ward off (evil) because of their deserts. Evil toucheth them not, nor do they grieve. (61) Allah is Creator of all things, and He is Guardian over all things. (62) His are the keys of the heavens and the earth, and they who disbelieve the revelations of Allah - such are they who are the losers. (63) Say (O Muhammad, to the disbelievers): Do ye bid me serve other than Allah? O ye fools! (64) And verily it hath been revealed unto thee as unto those before thee (saying): If thou ascribe a partner to Allah thy work will fail and thou indeed wilt be among the losers. (65) Nay, but Allah must thou serve, and be among the thankful! (66) And they esteem not Allah as He hath the right to be esteemed, when the whole earth is His handful on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens are rolled in His right hand. Glorified is He and High Exalted from all that they ascribe as partner (unto Him). (67)

[  translation by pickthal  ]

things that awakened me with cold sweat in the middle of the night is not that i have not done enough to 'awaken sleeping souls' amongst the believers ie, my friends, my children,m y friends' children, my patients, my wife ,a couple or two tansris and two dozen or so dato and dato sris, and a sultan or two etc etc .
that, i think i have done my fair share to the point, some friends have relegated me to the 'scam' section .

but what about mr and mrs lim, my immediate neighbour who are trinitarians.
june  and sham, my nurses;
ali khan, the anesthetic assistant who 15 years ago joined the seventh day adventist after falling in love with shirley tan, the clinic p.a;
ranga , the hospital attendant , whom i crosses path more than 10 times a day along the hospital corridors;
dr so and so and so, all my good friends, colleagues  and fellow 'sufferers in this life' with whom i share my hospital 'life'[ if there is any ], 15 hours a day , seven days a week.....

due to political correctness; politeness and blah blah blah, i cannot reach them.
'it is not right'; it is not ethical etc etc and etc.

....and yet i know i have all the goodies of islam to share with them.

masyaallah!

that is life, but in yaumiddin, how do i answer them?

how do we all answer their pleas to allah that, " my friends so and so knew islam, but never even bother to soft sell it to us!......we are plain ignorant , my lord!.....if they they inform us of islam we would have done a taubatan nasuha....you my lord are ya rahman , ya rahim! "
