Surah al Taghaabun, 64..........deeper dive with dr shaykh haitham al haddad

part 2, commentary of shaykh dr haitham al haddad

[  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzlL4fvqnmc   ]

40:10   ........listen hard all dear sinners!..........repentance, repentance repentance

54:15  .........' all of us must 1st change our hearts...'

friends, dato and tansri,

'deeper dive', here evokes  good memories of my scuba diving days some years back.

the deepest safe dive one can do is at about 90 to 100 feet down. even then one can stay at this level for several minutes only because , at 100 feet we consumed more compressed air from our tank due to high compressive pressure of the water at this level compressing even our lungs.

a few minutes spent at the sea bed and up you go on your slow accent upward, and stopping at 15 feet from the surface for a three minute decompression interval, forcing oneself to have long period of exhalation ....a safety procedure all scuba divers take  and practise as biblical truth, to make sure the lungs would not burst from sudden fast accent, due to sudden expansion of air in the alveoli of the lungs giving rise to life threatening pneumothorax, ie burst lungs

the best scenic dives are usually at 30 to 50 feet in depth  where there are lots of vegetations, fishes  and colours!
but then big fishes are deeper..

at 100 feet down on the sea bed the whole world is in black and white, no colours, since the surface light reach very little here.
different shdes of gray , to be precise.

eerie silence.
my favourite spot to say prayers and zikrullah!

the danger of deep dive is nitrogen psychosis.
at this level one get more nitrogen collected in one's blood and this can give rise to  a kind of stupour and euphoria.  to a point one may not be too sure one is ascending or descending.
that is why in diving we have a buddy system. we dive in pairs to countercheck each other.

wreck dive, dives in sipadan and maldives, where there are atolls are neccesarily deep dives

some 10 years back deputy minister and senator, dato alex lee, a long time diver and very experienced, was found drowned in a diving accident somewhere in flores.

people in the diving community hypothesized that , as he was an avid spear fishing enthusiast and an able diver, he was forced into deeper dive by a big catch and in his excitement brought to deeper depth by swift under sea current., and from there he got nitrogen psychosis, going deeper and deeper....

allahualam

so when my daughter dr nathasha, some years back, told me she wanted to take up scuba diving, i discouraged her.
" tak payah lah sha...too many things can go wrong down there. you have two kids and a husband to take care off.."

with the qur'an, it is different.
deeper dive into the qur'an would not kill, maim you permanently or make you lost.
a paediatric colleague at my hospital some years retorted to me , when i tried to introduce tafseer to him,
" nik, to me abdullah yusuf ali is enough..."

omg!

how can we move mountains of rust collected over years of ghaflah if we have this kind of attitude?

people often ask me, " doc what do you think is wrong with our malay muslims, nowadays?"
i say right away.,

" kurang fikir , kurang zikr, kurang ilmu qur'an......kuran, kurang , kurang!"

otherwise how can you explain an ex minister of law and some ladies taking mais/jakim to court over a fatwa!!

or the ex pm taking the nation to something down like 100 billion rm!

or ceo's and professors in universities still in cloud nine and denial state over this issue?!

all and sundry from mamaks on the street to monarchs in their istanas warming their  ....sses doing nothing for years.
all just happy with their 'cari makan' and 'dedak' that percolate down to them.

Surah al Taghaabun, 64........deep dive into the surah, part 1

friends, dato and tansri,

today, just after jumaat prayer, the congregation at section 19 subang jaya mosque, collectively did a 2- rakaat hajat prayer, pending the appeal at federal court level by s.i.s versus jakim[ or was it mais? ], over the issue of fatwa.
i think this was done nation wide in most mosque.
mashaallah!

this group of ladies and  one man [ a former law minister  with the old amenu ] thought it fit to bring jakim to court to nullify a fatwa jakim passed some years back.
if they win, it would be a landmark judgment, a'uzubillah!

personally i have different name for this group of ladies but it is not polite to publicise it here.
to them it is just a question of the law,; whether it is constitutional? etc etc....

as a committed muslim i look beyond the law.....beyond the narrow confine of constitution and rights
these people are opening a pandora's box of worms!!
if they win their case, it can mean in future any muslim who is not happy about a fatwa, just challenge it in court....

and i am not even thinking yet about what allah will say to dato apakahnamadiadah, the sole male who signed his name in between the dotted lines in bringing up the appeal:
"you dare challenge MY people. ulama' are an extension of MY nabi.....what have you to say about it? "
....at that time this dato from kelantan stands , all schrivelled up, with sweat up to his nostrils...
.....there is no constitution where he can hide behind.....
....i pity his complete ignorance in his ugama ....he is getting into something he cannot comprehend!

ustaz dr abdullah yasin alluded to this as a parallel issue early in his opening gambit, even though his discourse well pre-dated this issue
do listen.

Surah al Taghaabun, 64...........an overview by ustad nouman ali khan

your excellency,

2 senior cabinet members of the previous cabinet  yesterday finally leaved amenu
2 to 3 years too late.

patik's central thesis has always been, if people  or cohorts like them[ patik normally have stronger words for them, but this is polite circle, patik will refrain from using it ] leaved the govt some 2 to 3 years earlier  in droves, the nation would not have been in  a deeper shit than where we are now....almost a bankrupt nation.

and still not awakened!....at least by the politics that is still going on at present.
the cow and horse tradings behind the scene, et and etc
these clowns do not seem to have an once of integrity  or shame!

these lowly 'dedak eaters', by thier commission, omission and absolute silence, are complicit in a crime that would set back the nation, if we are not yet bankcrupted by that time, be in a state of indebtedness well beyond 2039!!

and yet, the whole nation is still in a state of ennui and malaise.
the leadership scraping at bits and pieces of wisdom.
the principal culprit still thumbing his nose at the raayat.
some clowns out there still in a permanent, decrepit, denial state.

just look at tghh yesterday.
how pathetic can this aging leader of an islamic party can be!..making public statement that bringing the culprit to justice is a complicity with outside interference......
instead of nahi mungkar amal ma'afuf, this is the best this chap can say!!

actually your excellency, the whole institutions, from middle top to the very 'untouchable top' have failed us the raayat.

we move on now to surah al taghabun.

if we dive deeply into the depth of the surah we will  find answers resounding back to us right on the face.

Before We Move On to Surah al Taghaabun, 64.........Come , come...

your excellency,

my son, johan, asked me the other day, '' which way am i to go dad, follow ustaz azhar and ustaz shamsuri and most mufti's way of the ugama or be coccooned by the straight jacket of dr maza, dr rozaimi, ustaz fathul bari, and ustad rasul dahri way...? "

i told him:

"johan, you are asking papa to open up papa's yet to be written book called," islam 101 for idiots! ". the book is still up there in the cloud
it may not even see the light of the day!

joe, you can choose either way or even both ways;... or beg to differ on special issues , if you have the knowledge of a budding qardhawi....but islam in the 1st 100 years post nabi was the islam of sahabat, tabi'in and tabi-tabi'in......ie , the nabi way of islam.
what nabi did, said, purported to have said all were recorded by oral tradition by his sahabat.
his likes and dislikes.
the number of facial hairs on his face , everything all in the open
nabi is an open secrets.
not the secrets that we now are exposed to of what ntr or ringgit malaysia did.

no! no!
nabi is maksum.
even his mannerisms at home were recorded and orally by his dear wives and 'mothers of the faithful, affectionately, mostly sayyeditina aisya'.

oral tradition amongst the arabs during nabi's time was excellent.
there were hundred thousands of these oral tradition passed from one generation to another, most 'sanad' impeccable, some dubious and some outright maudhu'.

this is understandable as the political life of the muslims get muddled from beyond caliph muawiya's time onwards.

muawiya on his death bed intimated to his errant son yazid to deal with nabi's grandsons sayyidina hussien and hassan gently but he did not and the slaughter at karbali followed.
that was the beginning of 'political ' islam.

in fact political islam began well during sayyedina othman's time as the empire gets bigger.
some hadith became politicised....and i am not mentioning the dichotomy of shiism and sunism inot the picture yet, just the differences within the sunni only.

thankfully though, there were separation of power between 'ulama' and the sultans or caliph of that time, alhamdullillah...this is allah's grace to us present day muslims.

if you follow the lives of the 4 imam, during the post tabi'in period, theirs were not simple 'makan gaji' type of scholars we have today.
most of them were incarcerated by the respective caliph of the day.

they lead hard, zuhud life.

all the four great imam  ie hanafi, maliki, hambali and shafei.
even then , if you are not a great scholar, and does not know say 10,000 hadiths by heart and their relative sanads, you are obliged to follow one of them for your own 'safety' net. if the 4 great imam were wrong with their interpretation of the qur'an and hadth, at least you are assured of great company.

imam ghazali and his associates come in 3 centuries after nabi, when the muslims were in control of half of the known world.
by his writings and teaching he was a reformer of his time
a century later came ibnu taimyiah, another great reformer, and his prolific student, ibnu qayyim al jauzi

imam bukhari and muslim and abu dawud et etc were 200 plus after nabi.

if you live in the 15th century c.e, for example, there is no big querrel.
you either belong to one of the 4 mazhab in term of jurisprudence and  follow the al ghazaliah school or the al taimymiah school, in term of spirit and leaning.
not only that, you would usually belong to one of the many tarekat group for guidance and camaraderie.

al ghazalian school tend to be more circumspective and highly spiritual in their outlook  and oftentimes lost in zikr and remembrance, and the taimiyah school tend to be upright like 'school prefects' .....

both are ok.

to throw the spanner in to the engine, then in the 17th century, came ibnu abdul wahab, a reformer from the at taimyaih school. he was a fire brand fundamentalist.
ibnu abdul wahab is the principal 'tok guru' of the present day wahabi movement.

present day 'wahabis', just because they have finish reading a couple of dozen books on ugama , and 'by heart' a few hundred hadiths, they think they have the monopoly of knowledge and methodology to knowledge!

compounded to this, some 100 years ago with the help of lawrence of arabia, the young 'prince' faisal, son of abdul aziz was involved in a major uprising of the arabs against the ottomans.

pan arabism follows.
later the bludgeoning petrodollar enriched the arab states surrounding the nejd desert.
makkatul mukharamah and madinatul munawarah compete head to head with the centuries old al azhar school.

ibnu abdul wahab's fundamentalist views grow from strength to strenght.

now back to your choice, joe....

do you want to be a school prefect or do you want to be in love?
this is not mutually exclusive though joe....
you can suspend the decision, just carry on your ilm gathering at the masjid from tok gurus and tok gurus, read read and read a lot of tafseer and books on ugama, and decide later.

but papa is not going to give you an unbiased advice.
no! no!
i want you to go thru life s a lover...not a school prefect..stuck at age 60 plus still at the ablution phase of the ugama........that is what being a wahabi is!
they missed the kernel and the honey.

papa is unashamedly biased here since at this age of 3 score and six, papa just see too many examples amongst papa's friends and colleagues.

even then at the end of the day it is still your choice.

with the 'wahabi's papa is reminded about pol pot's cambodia.
way back in 1975, well before you were born pol pot and his gang of revolutionary government declared that '' as of 1975...... this is year zero for cambodia! ", relegating centuries of cambodian culture and political growth to the dustbin of history.

before you decide to be a 'pol pot', suspend your choice and thread carefully.
enjoy the ugama.
there are many levels in the enjoyment of our ugama.
if you choose to be a 'pol pot' your enjoyment , in papa's estimation, would be a wee be stifled.

be a mukmin at all cost and may you and papa be blessed with husnul khatimah

no hurry....
enjoy the journey!  "

that , your excellency is my unpublished ' islam 101
 for idiots '
i do not think it will see the light of the day though!

Surah al Munafikun,63...............Commentary by Ustaz Shamsuri & Mufti Menk

friends, dato and tanseri,

we dive deeper into surah al munafikun with ustaz shamsuri hj ahmad of penang, malaysia, and mufti menk of zimbabwe.

menk's commentary  appears to me to be a wee 'bit sanitized', understandably because he is addressing a group of ladies and sisters. surah al munafikun is an 'electric shock' to one's sensibility, and menk is truing to be gentle here with ladies.

if you guys are constrained by time may i suggest you to listen to ustaz shamsuri.
his, is a deep, deep , dive.
there are lots of pearls and gem down there but please be prepared to be 'shocked' as most of us , myself included, have  al munafikun traits which need to be 'braso'-ed from time to time.

Surah al Munafikun, 63...........Prologue

rendition of surah by shaykh mishary rashid al afasy

friends, dato and tansri,

in these days and age of liberal islam, clowns like youknowwhom given centre stage in the national media of the country to display their lack of ilm and faith in the ugama and the increasing clamour for lgbt rights in the public space; overwhelming secularism dominating the socio-political landscape; surah al munafikun is as  relevant today as during nabi's [ pbuh ] time.

more relevant than ever before, i would surmise.

these are the days and age when phd's  in comparative theology from sorbonne , boston or michigan have the temerity to want to re-interpret the qur'an, to be inline with the dominant secular world.

where the meek and  those who just found islam in their forties or 50's , want to make  do without the hadith........just the qur'an will do....and wet in the ears youngsters and university lecturers join in the 'fun'

where, rampant across the muslim hinterland with very  rare exception here and there, corrupt muslim leaders, rulers, kings , sheikhs, emirs, 5 star generals,  and very senior civil servants move in cohort to  rob and plunder national wealth to the very brim with impunity, and the raayat just able only to stand by and watch.

etc etc and etc.

during nabi's  [pbuh ] time , even abdullah bin ubays, the doyen of al munafikun of that time was oftentimes seen in the company of our nabi at zohor and asr prayers and jumaat prayers in masjid nabawi.

at isyak and subuh prayers he was nowhere to be seen.
chandeliers and electricity were not yet fashionable then.

that was the high medinan standard of that time.

now, the dividing line has been lowered, much much lower, and not as clear cut.
the term al munafikun has been a great taboo to be used.
instead we have other euphemisms.

let us listen to ustad nouman ali khan as a preamble to the surah.
.....and in his 2nd discourse in this slot he took a pedestrian journey through surah al baqarah  touching also on issues of hypocrisy in our ummah.

do listen to both the discourse and the khutbah and ponder deeply.
change or all of us will be changed...

Before We Move On To Surah al Munafikun, 63.........Ustad Abdul Somad and T J Winter on Tassawuf

friends, dato and tanseri,

we have just gone through ibnu qayyin's descriptive and spiritually tintillating  journey of a suluk through his 'madarij as salilkin' . ibnu qayyim is a 14th century mujaddid

his 10 stations, enumerated beautifully by prof ovamir anjum  in our earlir discourse,, was a truncated version of an earlier ulama, at least three centuries earlier, an afghan reformer by the name of abu ismail al harawi al ansari in his long thesis, manazil as sairin.

in this slot, at the obvious risk of raising eyebrows and inuendos from amongst my good friends and old classmates from my malay college days, who in the main have enveloped the 'salafi' school.

it is trendy nowadays to be an adherrent of dr rozaimi or ustaz rasul dahri or dr maza, dr abdullah yasin etc etc.
in fact i notice lately this trend has even creep into my own immediate family.
and i do not insist that this is fundamentally wrong except some of this people can enjoy the din better if they open up to the rest.
that is a personal view of course.

taking into the view that tassawuf and sufism can invoke negative feeling in some who somewhat choose  to move around in blinkers , who went along with the mistaken notion that their later day 'tok gurus' have the monopoly of knowledge, and the methodology to knowledge, beyond thousands of other earlier luminaries throughout 14 centuries of islam.

their tok gurus; muhammad ibnu abdul wahab [1703-1792 ], ibnu qayyim [14th century ] and the doyen of the two tok guru, ibnu taimiyah [ 1263-1328 ], are adequate .

the methodology, the scholarship and zuhudness of only these three ulama are correct......
the rest, and we are speaking of thousands of them, even 3 to 4 centuries more senior , are all wrong!
they can go and fly kites!

may i suggest to them  to just take off that blinkers for a moment and now let us cross over the java strait and join ustad abdul somad's discourse on tassawuf

.....and if you are still awake and with me, let us take a flight to the uk, go up several planes above ourselves, and join the rarefied atmosphere in cambridge to listen to the scintillating views of dr t.j winter on the same subject/
a wee bit long though :

[   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQWNeGyRu0k   ]

if one still must insist one is a 'salafi' and the rest can go and fly kites, it is ok.
islam is a spectrum.
there are levels and levels in faith.
to each , his own.
