Surah Fatir......ayat 1 to ayat 5

[  commentary by mufti waseem khan of trinidad/tobago  ]

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Praise be to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who appointeth the angels messengers having wings two, three and four. He multiplieth in creation what He will. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things. (1) That which Allah openeth unto mankind of mercy none can withhold it; and that which He withholdeth none can release thereafter. He is the Mighty, the Wise. (2) O mankind! Remember Allah's grace toward you! Is there any creator other than Allah who provideth for you from the sky and the earth? There is no God save Him. Whither then are ye turned? (3) And if they deny thee, (O Muhammad), messengers (of Allah) were denied before thee. Unto Allah all things are brought back. (4) O mankind! Lo! the promise of Allah is true. So let not the life of the world beguile you, and let not the (avowed) beguiler beguile you with regard to Allah. (5)

Surah Fatir.........Prologue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4M4cAUN0Rc

friends, dato and tansri,

try listening to the whole surah fatir 'unplugged', listen to this beautiful rendition of the surah by mishary rashid al afasy [ with direct transliteration into english ], minus any tafseer.
the qur'an is best heard in its raw qur'anic arabic without any transliteration but 99 % of us are  ' maa fi araby...' unfortunately.

i have tried this , 3, 4 and finally for the 5 th time.
it has it's special effect, listening it 'raw' and 'unplug'.

i know my good friend and classmate, dr tuan syed abdul kadir al sagoff and another childhood friend , tuan hj nadzru azahari, both excellent arabists in their own ways, would liken listening to the qur'an with deep comprehension of qur'anic arabic and all its nuances and its meanings compared to its translation would be a difference between watching hi-definition 64 inches 2017 coloured samsung,  and a 1960 monochrome black and white.

but we mere mortals have to start somewhere.
my advice to people in my position at  the  rather 'cerebrally' brittle age of 65, is 'don't despair'!

if knowing 'arabic' is everything, this current despairing condition in the arabic world would not have occurred.
they know arabic but they disregard the qur'an, despite that.

having said that, if you are still young and have children, please, please, please....learn to speak and comprehend  qur'anic arabic...you and the children......NOW!

your world view will no longer be dominated and tinted by cnn, bbc or aljazera......'language is more than a mean of communication, it is the whole gamut of cultural, political and religious nuance'.

in 2017, more than ever before, we have to look at the world with some semblance of an 'islamic ' tinge'. otherwise we will accept all the 'nonsense' thrown to us on a daily basis by the media, electronic and otherwise.

we are not what the morons out there want us to feel... .and there are many of them: hanson, trump, blair , bush, le pen, wilders etc and etc, just to name a few on the current international scene..

i have said this before and i will say it again, ' when you rubbished the din of 1.6 billion humanities on this earth, you are bound to get carnage from the peripheral elements of the ummah.
there has to be a new world order, an order of mutual respect and tolerance.....

this aside, we can still keep our heads high.
we have a caring and highly nuanced history and past.
we still have our 'book'  100 % intact, and our 'sop's from sayyedina rasullallah.
the 'sop's , while at the fringes are points of contention here and there, the main body is pretty well agreed upon.

the rest of the world have lost their  'books'.
they are already in their 'dinghies' and what have you, our supertanker are still very much afloat.
yes, accepted, most of the crews are pretty well drunk and seasick, but we are still generally well intact.....

[...at the end of the day it is back to my favourite maxim: it is ilm , ilm , ilm and ilm.... if  some muslim must insist they want to go thru life wearing blinkers they are free to do so, and if some others want to go without wearing one they are also welcomed......but the bottomline is, all of them must do it with ilm, ilm and ilm........let us not debate on matters of ugama, leave it to the experts if they have to... ]

let us travel 1st class!......

friends, dato and tansri,

so you have chosen yourself to be a 'traveler'.
NO! ....you  definitely do not want to be in cattle class or even the 2nd class.
you want to travel 1st class!

you want to cross the 'sirat' with relative ease....
you want to plant your 'palm trees ' in jannah....

do zikr.
start now my friends!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmKBf3kGbbg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX6uAsRQN9Q

from here you can move forward:
for example, just for example only, imam al ghazali, in his book of prayer  and wirid, in volume 1 of his ihya, recommended many steps, ten altogether, and one of them , his observation of what the elite of the elites [ ..abi'd...]  do as one of the ten recommended steps ,was to repeat 1000 'kulhuwallah'; 1000 tasbeeh, tahmid and tahlil,; and 1000 'selawat to the prophet', amongst other things, on the whole  of friday ie from thursday magrib prayer to friday asar prayer...allahualam

i tried this experiment  last week, just doing the 'three 1000' only, and collectively done continously, it was easily in excess of  just  about 3 hours.
it is 'dowable' even by mere mortals like us.
it is the istiqamah that will separate the men from the boys...

but if you are a serious traveler, it will become a pleasure......
with initial difficulty , come ease.
that is the joy of 'traveling'.

ps:

you would have noticed by now i always like to quote al ghazali...he is my favourite actually.
and why not?

he was 'hujjatullah islam' of his time. [ born 1058, died 1111 ]
during his time at nizamiah university as adjunct professor in theology he could out-debate anyone on matters of fekah of the ugama and philosophy.

of al farabi and ibnu sina, great men and contemporaries of his time, he wrote, or rather he pulverised their  philosophical leanings, in his book 'the deliverance of error' as such, ...." none however of the muslim philosophers , engaged so much in transmitting Aristotle's lore as did the two men just mentioned....... the sum of what we regard as the authentic philosophy of aristotle as transmitted by al farabi and ibn sina, can be reduced to three parts: a part which must be branded as unbelief ; a part which must be stigmatised as innovation; and a third part which need no repudiation at all..".

in short these two were rubbished by al ghazali for their love affair with things greek..

after 12 years or so of 'existential crisis' spent in the desert of syria, he came back fully versed in both esoteric and exoteric islam.

he wrote voraciously and what he wrote were, importantly, all well documented.
he lived 450 years after nabi, 200 years after the time of muslim ibnu al hajj and muhammad bhukari, both great hadith collectors, in aperiod where oral tradition was supreme

in short , if we read him well, he should be a wholesome 'tok guru', to pick up some ilmu , pearls and gem, here and there , firsthand, with a high degree of confidence

two bright stars of the muslim world, ibnu qayyim [ 1293 - 1350 ] and his teacher, ibnu taymiah [ 1263 - 1328 ], both reformers of their time were easily 2 centuries beyond al ghazali. muhammad ibnu abdul wahab , another reformer, was easily 7 centuries after him.

in a society where oral tradition were supremely important , my central thesis is that al ghazali is more 'salafi' than these three great men.
at least he can quote and count hasan al basri as one of his teachers' teacher.
hasan al basri is a tabi'un, having being taught by sayyedina ali in his youth since he grew up in the household of ummu salamah, nabi's wife.
alghazali quoted al hasan a lot in the ihya. ghazali's teachers were tabi-tabi-tabi tabiun. 4 generations after nabi.

why al ghazali remained to be a 'persona non grata' and 'unmentionable' to present day so-called 'salafis' and wahabbis like dr maza, dr rozaimi and rasulapakahnamadiadah et al , is beyond my comprehension.!
they all learn their ugama from books!! getting their ma's and phd's or whatever.

incidentally, ibnu qayyim and his teacher, both were incarcerated in prison by the sultan of that time for their stance on grave visitation. they were even against people visiting the grave of prophet muhammad [ pbuh ] in madinah!
this did not in anyway belittle their greatness as reformers of the ugama of that time, bu their present day followers 'climb up the wrong tree'.

footnote : oftentimes i felt like giving a tight slap to the numbskulls guarding prophet's grave whenever they shout ..'haram haram haram'....to guests of the holy house when these people start raising their hands in supplication. these numbskulls think guests to the prophet's mosque, who travelled thousands of kilometres to be there, have brains as small as them...]

these same 'literalists' were the people who wanted to 'excavate ' nabi's tomb some 45 years back since their tok gurus' had the perception that 'grave' should not be in 'masjid' . thanks to tengku abdul rahman and the other oic members at that time, the plan was subsequently shelved.
these 'literalists' had no respect for the nabi.....nabi's house in makkah was turned into a public toilet near the present central bus station for fear that pilgrims will venerate the place.

these very same clowns  who almost wanted to collect heavy entry  tax for pilgrims this year in 2017, but opted not to after much complaint and 'animal' noise from the rest of the world.

their teachers can be great people but if their present day followers do not use their brains fully and correctly, islam go down the drain.

with IS and other things going on, it certainly is!

that is the basic problem with the wahabbis!.....they are 'too blinkered', and they tend to under-rate  other people's motives and thoughts. there is nothing wrong in choosing to use 'blinkers' for safety in the practise of one's ugama but much has to be said about imposing this 'blinkered views ' upon others in the , alhamdullillah, wide spectrum of what is known as the din of islam.

this wide spectrum is a nikmat and a barakah from allah.
allahualam,

Surah as Saba'....epilogue, ayat 45 to 55

friends , dato and tansri,

you may be a cambridge, oxford, a yale or harvard graduate.
you may think everything islamic is below you.
you may have been bought by the the present western judeo christian ploy that  prophet muhammad[ pbuh] was just a big time charlatan and at worse, a blatant paedophile.
you may think islam is nothing but terror.
you may even concur that muslims are at the bottom league of nations.

think and ponder.
islam is an idea long overdue.
you, donald trump et al and everyone out there who think likewise are on a losing side.
islam will prevail

I exhort you unto one thing only: that ye awake, for Allah's sake.

Say (unto them, O Muhammad): I exhort you unto one thing only: that ye awake, for Allah's sake, by twos and singly, and then reflect: There is no madness in your comrade. He is naught else than a warner unto you in face of a terrific doom. (46) Say: Whatever reward I might have asked of you is yours. My reward is the affair of Allah only. He is Witness over all things. (47) Say: Lo! my Lord hurleth the truth. (He is) the Knower of Things Hidden. (48) Say: The Truth hath come, and falsehood showeth not its face and will not return. (49) Say: If I err, I err only to my own loss, and if I am rightly guided it is because of that which my Lord hath revealed unto me. Lo! He is Hearer, Nigh. (50) Couldst thou but see when they are terrified with no escape, and are seized from near at hand, (51) And say: We (now) believe therein. But how can they reach (faith) from afar off, (52) When they disbelieved in it of yore. They aim at the unseen from afar off. (53) And a gulf is set between them and that which they desire, as was done for people of their kind of old. Lo! they were in hopeless doubt. (54)

for your own posterity, be a winner.

Surah as Saba'.........ayat 40 to ayat 44

friends, dato and tansri,

we carry on with mufti wassem khan commentary of ayat 40 to 44 of surah as saba'

And on the day when He will gather them all together, He will say unto the angels: Did these worship you? (40) They will say: Be Thou glorified. Thou art our protector, for them! Nay, but they worshipped the jinn; most of them were believers in them. (41) That day ye will possess no use nor hurt one for another. And We shall say unto those who did wrong: Taste the doom of the Fire which ye used to deny. (42) And if Our revelations are recited unto them in plain terms, they say: This is naught else than a man who would turn you away from what your fathers used to worship; and they say: This is naught else than an invented lie. Those who disbelieve say of the truth when it reacheth them: This is naught else than mere magic. (43) And We have given them no scriptures which they study, nor sent We unto them, before thee, any warner. (44)        [ translation by pickthal ]

while at surah as saba' , let us revisit surah al adiyat, a surah some of us reviewed together sometime in sept, 2012, when our tafseer class started some 5 years back

surah al adiyat is again a stark reminder to us of that 6' by 2' hole in the ground awaiting us all with its fitnah and  uncertainties.

to me personally it is a reminder  of the good old day some 10, 13 years back.

read sayyid qutb's sublime commentary and do listen again to our  very special shaykh abu talha, before trump et al get him 'droned'....
