Surah al Buruj , 85

yab tun,

as i read and re-read muhammad al ghazali's [ 1916- 1996, doyen of institute of islamic thoughts and civilization, algeria or was it morocco? ] sad recollection of his short parting conversation with a group of young jihadists decades back fighting against zionist and western hegemony in the fertile sand of their birth , palestine, i cannot help but feel both poignantly helpless and angry at the same time.

here we are in 2019, still as helpless as before, way back after the 1st world war when all the hyenas and lions of europe along with america were dividing and subdividing muslim hinterland like we were fallen gazeles and zebras.

some of my educated friends who had their education from oxford, cambridge and harvard harbour the age old, nonetheless erroneous sentiment that abu hamid al ghazali, the hujjatul islam of the end of the 10th century as being the catalyst for the muslim's subsequent downfall
southward.

everywhere now muslims are shot at like mad dogs.....china, syria, chechen, khasmir, somalia, yemen, pattani, libya, algeria...you name it.

these half educated ''idiots'' who should know better are just echoing what most enemies of islam have been saying for decades:

"......islam is a 'rubbish religion, founded by a paedophile, whose billions of adherents found nothing better to do than to go round a black box.
round and round and round they go!
that seemed to be their life ambition and total preoccupation........"

and ' syedharijumaatapakahnamadiadah ' is currently lamenting the same song !

i  pointed to them that the rhyme and reasons for our malaise were muti-layered and multifaceted, and not insignifacantly small of them was the fact that we muslims of this generation and the one belonging to yours, have lost our 'balls' and ugama!

at the most we are just  nominal muslims in practice  and fervour.!

our abject failure is not due to this great muslim of his time, who produced and wrote volumes exhorting muslims of his time to be 'good muslims'.......to be only servants , subservient only to the ' one and only ',  and not to just any 'duli' or sultans or kings or dictators or even superpowers of the day!....

otherwise the seljuk and later a specie of them, the ottomans would not have ruled most part of europe and had influence of the rest of 2/3 of the known world of that time right up to the end of the 20th century.

in this 21 st century, the battle of the minds has gone beyond borders and nuclear capabilities and dollars and cents.....this century is the muslim century.

islam is an idea long overdue.

but this would be a long story and will be played decades and centuries beyond you and me when we depart to be with our beloved....the details to the minutest of incidence and history already long predetermined in loth mahfuz.....

alhamdullillah, beyond the end of time we will prevail, insyaallah!

we move on to surah al buruj.
do listen to shaykh navaid aziz's story of the ' boy and the ditch ', it is obliquely related to what i write here and my argumet with one good dato in june last year !

Surah Al-Burooj
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars, (1) And by the Promised Day. (2) And by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony, (3) (Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch (4) Of the fuel-fed fire, (5) When they sat by it, (6) And were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers. (7) They had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise, (8) Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is of all things the Witness. (9) Lo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning. (10) Lo! those who believe and do good works, theirs will be Gardens underneath which rivers flow. That is the Great Success. (11) Lo! the punishment of thy Lord is stern. (12) Lo! He it is Who produceth, then reproduceth, (13) And He is the Forgiving, the Loving, (14) Lord of the Throne of Glory, (15) Doer of what He will. (16) Hath there come unto thee the story of the hosts (17) Of Pharaoh and (the tribe of) Thamud? (18) Nay, but those who disbelieve live in denial (19) And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them. (20) Nay, but it is a glorious Qur'an. (21) On a guarded tablet. (22)

Recitation by Shaykh Mishary Rashid al-Afasy ,

The surah opens with the declaration: " By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars, (1) And by the Promised Day. (2) And by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony, (3) (Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch (4). This is a reference to huge trenches in the ground filled with burning substances into which believers have sometimes been thrown as punishment for their faith. This has been the fate of numerous believers thoughout human history, meted out to them  at the hand of tyrants whose cruelty and ruthlessness know no bounds.

I have personally known some martyrs and felt that they had only existed for such a great feat. They have nothing but disdain for their oppressors and the falsehoods they propagate, and have no qualms about giving up their lives for what they believe to be right. I once heard such martyr  say shortly before his death: " To die for truth is life itself! " Over fifty years ago, a group of young Muslims came to bid me farewell as they were preparing to go to war in Palestine, and I never saw any of them again, but their bravery and heroism were the talk of their generation!

There is a story of a woman who, as she and her son were being led to the trench of fire, hesitated slightly, probably due to a mother's instinctive feeling for her son. But when the son urged his mother that she had nothing to fear because right was on her side, she stormed in the fire!
