Turning Your Empty Glass Right Side Up........

friends, dato and tanseri,

for those small band of people who have followed my tafseer blog from sept 2011, today represent a history of sort: we have completed  tafseer of the whole qur'an.
a 7 year journey....from a handful of diehards, the tafseer blog has a cumulative hits of over a 100k .
...not bad at all for my amanah saham akhirat!!

not bad since listening to tafseer is a lot of work.
even my dear wife and children normally just delete it the moment they received this from me...i know that from the weekly stats!!

starting with surah an naba next week, insyaallah , if allah give us another 7 years of life and clarity of purpose and focus, we will qatam the 'tafseer' another round.

in the process it will give me time to do some 'spring cleaning'; delete some commentators and add new ones as we go along.

as you know, 7 years ago there is not many commentaries in the utube to choose from as it is now..... i always try to be careful with whom i choose to be on the blog, trying to avoid some who have unhealthy 'leanings' unfairly perceived by many who may not be at all correct, political or otherwise etc etc.

oftentimes though, this cannot be avoided due to the relative dearth of good commentaries especially in bigger surah etc and etc.....

some 'ustazs' who should know better, wrote back to me 'rudely', to say this is 'wahabi', and this and that...just because the commentator had been schooled in jordan, madinah or makkah.
small brained  and small 'heart' ustazs i would say!

some say this chap and that chap is deobandi, sufi  etc and etc...

people with ba in ugama mentality commenting on people with phds and masters!

i cannot run away from the fact that at the rarefied top so called present scholars are either   deobandi or a 'wahabi' or an 'azhari' in their orientation....maturidi or as sunnah wal jamaah  or fiqhul maqarin [ 'comparative fiqh' ],etc etc and etc.

too much of 'they' and 'us'...........

we muslims have the habit of segmentation and over sectarianism in our perspective..avoiding the big picture trying to be close to HIM.

in present day circumstances, i cannot just limit myself to just a pondok in padang pak amat, pasir puteh, kelantan!.......these are only for pak mat nyadaps!!

needless to say i enjoy my work immensely even though doing it in between full time hospital work and the busy routine of an active interventional cardiologist, means i often times have to burn the midnight candle.

from now onwards , insyaallah, it will be easy for me...it is just going to be a cut and paste job.
alhamdullillah!
with window dressing and adjustments here and there.

before we move on to surah  an naba, let us move down under and listen to shaykh khalid's 2012 discourse on ' the purpose of life ', addressed to a mixed group of audience.

Surah Maryam,  beautifully  and hauntingly, recited by Shaikh Maher al-Mu'aqily
This surah starts with the miraculous birth of Isa [jesus] [peace be upon him]. it goes on to mention some other prophets of Islam: Adam, Idris [possibly Enoch], Nuh [Noah], Ibrahim [Abraham], Ishaaq [isaac], Yaqub [Jacob], Isma'il [ishmael], Musa [Moses], Harun [Aaron], Zakariyya [Zachariah], and Yahya [John the Baptish]
PEACE BE UPON THEM ALL.
It started with the narration of the story of aging Zakariya [peace be upon him] lamenting to Allah on his inability to have a son and heir to carry on the tradition of Islam to the next generation.
Surah Maryam, along with surah Yusuf [ on prophet Joseph ], two of the most beautiful surah in the Qur'an, was recited by Jaafar ibn Muttalib, prophet' uncle, who headed the early Muslim delegation seeking refuge in Christian Abbysinia [ present day Erithrea and Ethiopia ]; refugees from Makkah looking for shelter from  benevolent Christian Abbysinia. The  still unhappy Makkan Quresh shakers and movers, wanting to nip in the bud any possibility of a  growing Muslim community elswhwere ,sent an emissary to seek the audience of  the Christian King appealing for the repatriation all Makkan Muslims back to Makkah. Jaafar, in a moment of brilliance, recited surah Maryam.
The Christian king's 'heart' melted and the Muslims were given a reprieve. The Quresh mission ended in failure.
The King soon later embraced Islam.
Such was the beauty and appeal of surah Maryam.......

Surah An-Naba , 78

Surah An-Naba
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Whereof do they question one another? (1) (It is) of the awful tidings, (2) Concerning which they are in disagreement. (3) Nay, but they will come to know! (4) Nay, again, but they will come to know! (5) Have We not made the earth an expanse, (6) And the high hills bulwarks? (7) And We have created you in pairs, (8) And have appointed your sleep for repose, (9) And have appointed the night as a cloak, (10) And have appointed the day for livelihood. (11) And We have built above you seven strong (heavens), (12) And have appointed a dazzling lamp, (13) ....

Translation by Pickthal

Recitation by  qari, young Brother  Hasan bin Abdullah al-Awad,

Every community to which a messenger has come and claimed a divine commission, has the right to question his credentials and examine his assertions, and judge him accordingly. Let us then ask: What did Muhammad proclaim? He said that God existed, and he advanced powerful and unprecedented arguments and evidence for that. He said that there is only one God, the Creator of all that is in the heaven and the earth, and that all creatures, regardless of their state or status, submit totally to His power and will. He further asserted the inevitability of the Day of Judgment and the accountability of every responsible adult, and declared that: " Whoever does an atom's weight of good shall see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil shall see it also " [ al- Zalzalah : 7-8 ]

Why should anyone rejects these tenets or denounce Muhammad for proclaiming them? Has anyone come with anything better?

This surah says to the Makkan unbelievers:  If you are not convinced of  what Muhammad is saying, look at the physical world around you and reflect upon its creation. It asks: We not made the earth an expanse, (6) And the high hills bulwarks? (7) And We have created you in pairs," (8)

For the last fourteen centuries, human society has, besides Islam, seen many religions and ideologies, and should be able to judge their veracity and record fairly. The fact of the matter is that, under such scrutiny, Islam stand out above all the rest. In other words, one would be hard put to deny that Muhammad's mission is a true representative of the old as well as the new authentic divine revelation, and that othe r creeds are man-made. to believe in Muhammad is to believe also in Moses, Jesus, Noah, and Abraham..

The surah consists of four parts. The first one is a description of the physical world and of man himself, ending with verse 16. The second is a brief description of the Day of Judgment: Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time, (17) A day when the trumpet is blown and ye come in multitudes, "(18) . The numerous references in the Qur'an to the resurrection are intended to counteract man's love for life and worldly things.

The third section describes the punishment awaiting the wrong-doers: Lo! hell lurketh in ambush, (21) A home for the rebellious. (22) They will abide therein for ages." (23)

The fourth section, and final, part describes the rich rewards awaiting the good and the righteous: Lo! for the duteous is achievement - (31) Gardens enclosed and vineyards, (32) And maidens of companions;" (33)

The believers shall also experience true happiness and their faces shall glow with contentment, in the company of the angels, praising and glorifying their Lord. Their happiness will be complete as they settle down in rosy gardens, surrounded by exquisite young female companions. The surah asserts: That is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord." (39)

On that momentous Day, those concious of God will be successful, while the cynics will have nothing to show for their life here and will regret their actions when it would be too late. The surah warns: "  Lo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust!" (40)

We leave Muhammad's detractors with the following questions:
What did he gain for himself by proclaiming his message?
Was his crime that he was ardent in promoting it and pursuing its goals?
Was he wrong to confront the corrupt and the tyrants of his time?

Recitation by qari Mishary Rashid aal- Afasy ,

My personal interpretation of the opening verses of this surah is that they draw attention to heavenly bodies that float in space, in continuous motion, at various speeds, but without engines to propel them or navigators to direct then on their respective assigned orbits.

By those who drag forth to destruction, (1) By the meteors rushing, (2) By the lone stars floating, (3) By the angels hastening, (4) And those who govern the event, (5)

However, this whole complex system is destined to come to an abrupt end,, and all these phenomena will disappear. When will that happen? On the day when the first trump resoundeth. (6)And the second followeth it, "(7)

The huge cataclysmic quake will bring everything tumbling down. The whole world will be turned upside down and people's hearts will be filled with horror and anticipation. The unbelievers will then ask in bewilderment: "[.Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state (10) Even after we are crumbled bones?  "" (11)

Skeptics in this life  doubt the warnings of God's prophets and messengers They deny that the dead shall ever be brought back ti life. They would say:. "  They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding. "(12)

They gradually begin to realize that their denial and lack of faith had been an unwise preparation for such a momentous event. The surah asserts:Surely it will need but one shout, (13) And lo! they will be awakened." (14)

Twentieth century atheists are not really very much different than sixth-century pagan Arabs who had a purely material;istic and existentialist view of life: People are born, they die and are buried. There is no more life than that! What would they say or do when they are brought to life again?

The surah goes on to cite the Pharaoh as an example of intransigence and arrogance. The Pharaoh is a prototype of men who can be found in all walks of life. They are usually selfish, ruthless megalomaniacs who have no concept if justice and who would not flinch from violating the rights of others.

The surah then turns to address the whole of mankind, questioning their callousness and lack of faith in God. It ask:Are ye the harder to create, or is the heaven that He built? (27) He raised the height thereof and ordered it....  "(28). Compared to other creatures, man is small and weak; he should know better than to deny the truth or act like a tyrant. Man needs to be concious of God and to seek to earn His mercy and forgiveness. The power man has been given over other creatures ought to be harnessed and employed in the service of God and to praise and thank Him.

Towards the end the surah returns to the opening theme: The resurrection and punishment and reward, pointing out clearly that this life is but a precursor to the life to come.

It says:But when the great disaster cometh, (34) The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour, (35) And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth, " (36). On that day, mankind will be divided into two groups: those who succumbed to their weaknesses and desires and those who submitted to God and served His cause. The surah explains:

Then, as for him who rebelled (37) And chose the life of the world, (38) Lo! hell will be his home. (39) But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust, (40) Lo! the Garden will be his home. (41)

Despite their denials, skeptics have the audacity to be curious about the time when the final Hour might arrive. The surah says: They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port? (42) Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof? (43) Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the last hour.....

Surah 'Abasa , 80

Recitation with English transliteration.....Shaykh Mishary Rashid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhsmF5bAntU

Recitation by qari Shaykh Abdul Basit ,

The Prophet was busy one day addressing a group of prominent dignitaries from the Quraysh  tribe, in the hope that their joining the small community of Muslims would influence a large number of Arabs to turn to Islam too. A blind man, called Abd'Allah ibn Umm Maktum, interrupted him, demanding his attention and asking to talk to the Prophet. Muhammad was unperturbed, and it showed on his face. He ignored the blind man and continued his appeal to the Makkan notables.
This is the background to this surah which say:

He frowned and turned away (1) Because the blind man came unto him. (2) What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) (3) Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? (4)

The Prophet appreciated the reproach and thereafter became more differential and accomodating towards Ibn Umm Maktum. He would call him " the man my Lord censured me about! " It also became Muhammad's practice to leave Ibn Umm Maktum in charge of Madinah whenever he had to leave it for any reason.

The surah then continues to expound the nature of God's message.  It is a message to be passed on orally as well as in written form. Those who  received this message should reflect on it, appreciate its meaning, respond to God's call and prepare for the hereafter. Alas! Not all people react in a positive way to God's message.

Many people are oblivious, or have no interest in knowing how or why they have come to be alive. Man starts from a drop of fluid, then developed and grows into a full human being. Few people stop and reflect sufficiently on how they reached this stage and what power has brought them to it. They totally forget Almighty God, the source of their existence and sustenance. The surah inquires:

From what thing doth He create him? (18) From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, (19) Then maketh the way easy for him, (20) Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; (21) Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. (22)

In the course of life, man forgets all this and becomes occupied with fulfilling goals and  aspirations. Inevitably, he neglects his obligations towards God Almighty. The surah says: "Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him." (23)

Skeptics and unbelievers are always arguing against the resurrection and the Day of Judgment. They refuse to accept them and recognize only their present existence. The surah cites a simple argument as proof for resurrection by saying:

Let man consider his food: (24) How We pour water in showers (25)Then split the earth in clefts (26) And cause the grain to grow therein (27) And grapes and green fodder (28)  And olive-trees and palm-trees (29) And garden-closes of thick foliage (30)

How did all this come about? How did the various plants, fruits and trees come to have their distinct flavours, colors, smells, and structures? Whoever caused them to  grow out of dirt and peat must be capable of bringing humans back to life, and of making everyone face up to their record.

The surah goes on: "But when the Shout cometh (33) On the day when a man fleeth from his brother (34) And his mother and his father (35) And his wife and his children, (36) Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others)." (37
But today, people are seldom concerned about heaven and hell or punishment and  reward!

On that Day: " Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). (37) On that day faces will be bright as dawn, (38) Laughing, rejoicing at good news; (39) And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, (40) Veiled in darkness," (41)

It is a real pity that modern science has not, as yet, been able to go beyond physical and material reality. It continues to refuse to look into questions of metaphysics in any serious way at all.

Surah Al Takwir , 81

Recitation by qari  Shaykh Abdul Basit ,

The surah lists twelve cataclasmic events that will accompany the resurrection and the advent of the Day of Judgment.
1. When the sun is overthrown, "[1], and its light and the energy disappear and dakness engulfs the
     world.
2. And when the stars fall," (2), and are scattered aimlessly in space.
3. " And when the hills are moved," (3), and broken into pieces and strewn as dust.
4. And when the camels big with young are abandoned, "(4), with no one to care for them.
5. And when twild beasts are herded together," (5), from their remote habitat.
6. And when the seas rise, " (6), overflowing the land and sweeping away everything in their path.
7. " And when souls are reunited, "(7) and returned to their respective bodies.
8. And when the girl-child that was buried alive is asked (8) For what sin she was slain," (9), the
     questioning begins.
9.And when the pages are laid open, (10] and every human being is presented with his or her life
       history
10" And when the sky is torn away, "(11) , and completely transformed.
11" And when Hell is lighted, "(12) , ready to engulf the evil-doers.
12"  And when the garden is brought nigh," (13], to the believers with all its luxury and opulence.

That will be the time when: " (Then) every soul will know what it hath made ready. "(14). The verse list briefly the precursors for universal resurrection and the fate awaiting every human being.

Despite the fact that the earth is one of the smallest planets in the solar system, and the solar system itself represents but a tiny part of the universe, mankind is afforded the highest status and respect in the God's estimation. Nevertheless, man's response to God;s message and his relationship with the Almighthy is often faltering and inconsistent

In this surah, God calls for the galaxies and stars as witnesses to the validity of the Qur'an and the integrity of Muhammad's mission as guidance to all mankind and a mercy from God. It says:
"Oh, but I call to witness the planets, (15) The stars which rise and set, (16) And the close of night, (17) And the breath of morning (18) That this is in truth the word of an honoured messenger, "(19)

The majesty of the physical world is evidence of the eminence of revelation, both of which are signs of God's existence and power. The recitation of the Qur'an moves the human heart and brings one into harmony with the rest of the world, and puts all creation in direct contact with God Almighthy.

The surah mentions the Archangel Gibriel, sometimes referred to in the Qur'an as Ruh al- Quds, ointing out that he is greatly favoured and most highly trusted by God: " Mighty, established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne, (20) (One) to be obeyed, and trustworthy; " (21)

It was Gibriel who conveyed God's revelation to Muhammad who received it and relayed it to mankind fait hfully. Muhammad thoroughly absorbed the teachings and the spirit of the Qur'an, reflected them in his person and behaviour, and strove hard against all odds to translate them into reality and establish them as a basis for a civilization that has spread to all corners of the globe and left its  indelible mark on the history of mankind.

Despite it being among the earliest Qur'anic revelations, this surah very clearly establishes the universality of the message of Islam. It castigates Islam's detractors in Makkah, saying:
" Whither then go ye? (26) This is naught else than a reminder unto creation, (27) Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight." (28)

Man's duty is to make the effort. Everyone will be rewarded according to what he or she has done.

Recitation by qari Abdul Aal  al-Matwali

In this life, man is constantly required to watch the sky, marvel at the stars that adorn it and admire its symmetry and perfect design. The Qur'an asserts: "He created seven heavens, one above the other. You will not see any flaws in the Merciful's creation. Turn up your eyes: can you detect a single crack? " [ al Mulk : 3 ]

When the final Hourcomes, everything is turned upside down. It is a time When the heaven is cleft asunder, (1) When the planets are dispersed, (2) When the seas are poured forth, (3) And the sepulchres are overturned, (4) A soul will know what it hath sent before (it) and what left behind. (5)

Let us visualize the scene: Cracks all over the skies; stars shooting and falling in every directions; the oceans overflowing; and graves opening up and throwing out their contents, with the dead being prepared for resurrection in total bewilderment.

With this cataclysmic event in mind, a reprimand is given:

"O man! What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful, (6) Who created thee, then fashioned, then proportioned thee? (7) Into whatsoever form He will, He casteth thee. "(8)

Man will ask himself: What have I done during my life to prepare myself for this momentous day? In this life, man would sooner overlook divine advice and be led astray by his whims and desires. He tend easily to linger and fall behind when called upon to work hard and make some sacrifices.

For most people, the advent of the heafter will come as a shock, and they will be told:
Nay, but ye deny the Judgment. (9) Lo! there are above you guardians, (10) Generous and recording, (11) Who know (all) that ye do." (12). Throughout one's life, faithful angels accurately and meticulously record one's every action. On the Day of Judgment, every human being will be presented with a true and full account of their life before their final destination is decided. Lo! the righteous verily will be in delight. (13) And lo! the wicked verily will be in hell; " (14)

41.10.......there are lots and lot of proof  in the qur'an that god exist, but does an atheist or an agnostic has that ounce of decency and intellectual  honesty in himself  to accept it!
