Surah Al Maidah , 5 : 100 - 120

Excerpt from : A Thematic Commentary On The Qur'an "
Shaykh Muhammad al-Ghazali [ 1917 - 1995 ]

The surah ends with two topics: a call to the Christians to be sincere in the faith and to clean up and purify their doctrines and beliefs, and a reminder to the Muslims of their covenants with God and their need to respect and fulfill that covenants. We read God's solemn questioning of Jesus:

O Jesus, son of Mary! Didst thou say unto mankind: Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah? he saith: Be glorified! It was not mine to utter that to which I had no right. If I had ever said it, then Thou wouldst have known it. Thou knowest what is in my mind, and I know not what is in Thy Mind. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Knower of Things Hidden? (116)  I spake unto them only that which Thou commandedst me, (saying): Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. I was a witness of them while I dwelt among them, and when Thou tookest me Thou wast the Watcher over them. Thou art Witness over all things. (117)

The truth of the matter is that there is only one God, to whom all else submit in total humility. The Christian Churches have over the years tampered with the teachings of Jesus and contrived alien doctrines that do not reflect the spirit or objective of those teachings. Only pride and self interest drive them to insist on adopting these erroneous and false doctrines as part of the original and authentic Christianity.

As regards humankind's covenants with God, it is made clear that no special relationship exists between God and any particular human group. On the Day of Judgement, everyone shall meet his or her Lord and Creator alone to account for his or her deeds and actions.

Allah saith: This is a day in which their truthfulness profiteth the truthful, for theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they are secure for ever, Allah taking pleasure in them and they in Him. That is the great triumph. (119)

No one else but God commands sovereignty over this world, for

" Unto Allah belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is therein, and He is Able to do all things." (120)

Al Maidah contains some of the very last statements of legislation revealed to Prophet Muhammad.
