friends, dato and tanseri,
we are coming to the closing end of surah al an'am, ayat 155 to ayat 164.,with the late dr ahmad israr's short and brief discourse.
ayat 155 to ayat 159 :[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqZPmfcFhNk ]
ayat 159 to ayat 164 :[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiasMMYFvFQ ]
we then close off this series of discourse by moving on from sidi shaykh ahmad zarruq's already tumultous period of the 1400 al masehi , and fast forward to the 21st century, sit back at the auditorium in itm, shah alam.
let us give our ears to shaykh hamza hansom's short discourse on '' the crisis of knowledge '',
a theme much expounded and warned about by the likes of our very own scholar and philosopher, prof sayyid muhammad naguib al attas, and prof hoessien nasr, in the mid 80's.
what had been warned then, has now reached critical crisis level!

Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding. az-zumar, 9

Recitation by qari, Shaykh Muhammad Luhaidan:-
1 . ayat 26 to ayat 33,

2 . ayat 93 - ayat 94,

WE NOTICE THAT PEOPLE in various societies quite often develop religious practices and traditions of their own to decide what is good and what is bad, thereby confusing the true original religion with alien teachings and laws that can in many cases distort and obliterate it. Thus the surah delivers clear and strong directives:
Say: Come, I will recite unto you that which your Lord hath made a Scared duty for you:
1. that ye ascribe nothing as partner unto Him
2. and that ye do good to parents,
3. and that ye slay not your children because of penury - We provide for you and for them
4. and that ye draw not nigh to lewd things whether open or concealed.
5. And that ye slay not the life which Allah hath made sacred, save in the course of justice. This He hath command you, in order that ye may discern.
6. And approach not the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better, till he reach maturity.
7. Give full measure and full weight, in justice. We task not any soul beyond its scope.
8. And if ye give your word, do justice thereunto, even though it be (against) a kinsman;
9.and fulfil the covenant of Allah. This He commandeth you that haply ye may remember.
10. And (He commandeth you, saying): This is My straight path, so follow it. Follow not other ways, lest ye be parted from His way. This hath He ordained for you, that ye may ward off (evil). [ 151-153 ]
On hearing these verses, an Arab elder is reported to have commented, " Even if this were not religion, then it is certainly highly ethical and fair." False religious belief is usually the product of fatuous ideas and absurd myths presented as supernatural and mysterious.
Reflecting closely on these ten " commandments, " one cannot fail to see the underlying logic, wisdom, and common sense. There is none of the superstitious, mysticism, or wizardry that are typical of pagan belief and worship, past and present. Before Islam, the Arabs used to claim to be purer and much more intellectually endowed than the People of the Book, and that if they were, like them, to receive divine revelation, they would outshine them completely. God addresses this claim thus:
Or lest ye should say: If the Scripture had been revealed unto us, we surely had been better guided than are they. Now hath there come unto you a clear proof from your Lord, a guidance and mercy; and who doeth greater wrong than he who denieth the revelations of Allah, and turneth away from them? We award unto those who turn away from Our revelations an evil doom because of their aversion. (157)
The cautionary threat imparted in this verse is not addressed to seventh century AC Arabs alone, but to all modern-day Ba'thist, Arab nationalists, and secular Arabs , among others, who oppose Islam.
Wait they, indeed, for nothing less than that the angels should come unto them, or thy Lord should come, or there should come one of the portents from thy Lord? In the day when one of the portents from thy Lord cometh, its belief availeth naught a soul which theretofore believed not, nor in its belief earned good (by works). Say: Wait ye! Lo! We (too) are waiting. (158)
The Prophet is reported to have spoken of cataclysmic events to occur in the universe towards the end of the world, which will cause the sun rise in the west. At that moment it will be too late for regrets and repentance. What use it is for unbelievers to declare their faith when they are drowning or when they are in the throes of death? The question still remains whether the Arab nation of today will revert to Islam and save itself before it is too late. The Arabs are notorious for internecine conflict and division. Their appetite for such strife seems to be insatiable, thus inviting weakness and dissolution upon themselves. The surah warns the Prophet that he should:
Lo! As for those who sunder their religion and become schismatics, no concern at all hast thou with them. Their case will go to Allah, Who then will tell them what they used to do. (159)
The surah ends with three of the forty-four direct instructions addressed to the Prophet, which are as follows:
Say: Lo! As for me, my Lord hath guided me unto a straight path, a right religion, the community of Abraham, the upright, who was no idolater. (161)
Say: Lo! my worship and my sacrifice and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the Worlds. (162)
Say: Shall I seek another than Allah for Lord, when He is Lord of all things? Each soul earneth only on its own account, nor doth any laden bear another's load. Then unto your Lord is your return and He will tell you that wherein ye differed. (164)
The verses point to the fact that Muhammad had lead a life of total dedication to God and His message, and that he had done his utmost to deliver, uphold, and disseminate it faithfully and diligently.
The last statement in the surah is an affirmation of the nature of life in this world as a trial, a continuous test, from the beginning to the end. Human beings are being challenged and tested on their relations with other fellow humans as well as in their behavior towards and treatment of all that is around them. The result of this grand test shall be revealed later in the hereafter. Life here is a passing phase; it has no permanency. Nevertheless, what happens in this life is crucial for the final judgement.
He it is Who hath placed you as viceroys of the earth and hath exalted some of you in rank above others, that He may try you by (the test of) that which He hath given you. Lo! Thy Lord is swift in prosecution, and Lo! He verily is Forgiving, Merciful. (165)
