Surah Maryam , 19...Abraham,prophet and servant of God

Surah Maryam by Shaykh Maher al-Muaqly,

THE ACCOUNT OF JESUS is followed by an episode taken from the story Abraham and his many encounters with idol-worship throughout his life. The dialogue, which revolves around him and his father, epitomizes the nature of the unending struggle between Islam and other hostile ideologies witnessed in every generation. In a very earnest and poignant manner, Abraham pleads with his father on four separate occasions to abandon the pagan worship of idols which he indulged in and submit to the one true God. Eventually he says to him: "O my father! Why worshippest thou that which heareth not nor seeth, nor can in aught avail thee? (42) O my father! Lo! there hath come unto me of knowledge that which came not unto thee. So follow me, and I will lead thee on a right path. (43) O my father! Serve not the devil. Lo! the devil is a rebel unto the Beneficent. (44) O my father! Lo! I fear lest a punishment from the Beneficent overtake thee so that thou become a comrade of the devil. "(45)

In contrast to the earnest entreaties of his son, the father replies harshly and with severity: "Rejectest thou my gods, O Abraham? If thou cease not, I shall surely stone thee. Depart from me a long while! "(46)

Abraham's father threatened to have his son stoned and banished if he continued to insist on upholding the true faith. In reply Abraham cut himself off from his unbelieving father and people to find solace and spiritual companionship with God. In return for his loyalty and sincerity of faith, he and his offspring were chosen by God to carry on His mission to all humankind."So, when he had withdrawn from them and that which they were worshipping beside Allah, We gave him Isaac and Jacob. Each of them We made a prophet. "(49)
