THE THEME OF REVELATION AND MUHAMMAD's responsibility for conveying it to humankind recurs again in the surah when it says:
Thus We send thee (O Muhammad) unto a nation, before whom other nations have passed away, that thou mayst recite unto them that which We have inspired in thee, while they are disbelievers in the Beneficent. Say: He is my Lord; there is no God save Him. In Him do I put my trust and unto Him is my recourse. (30)
The ignorant pagan Arabs who had strongly resisted the message of the Qur'an used as their main alibi a request for Prophet Muhammad to perform a miracle or produce some extraordinary sign to prove the truth of what he was telling them. Elsewhere in the qur'an, we are told that even if he had been able to satisfy their demands they would not have believed him. In this surah we read of more such demands, including the following:
Those who disbelieve say: If only some portent were sent down upon him from his Lord! Thou art a warner only, and for every folk a guide. (7)
Those who disbelieve say: If only a portent were sent down upon him from his Lord! Say: Lo! Allah sendeth whom He will astray, and guideth unto Himself all who turn (unto Him), (27)
The unbelievers follow their inverted logic to its natural conclusion: "They who disbelieve say: Thou art no messenger (of Allah). Say: Allah, and whosoever hath knowledge of the Scripture, is sufficient witness between me and you "(43)
People, including those assumed to be religious or believing, cannot be expected to develop or nourish a faith in God unless they are willing and capable of using their minds and intelligence to study their own physiological and mental faculties and capabilities, as well as the systems in the universe around them.
