Surah al-Hajj ,22 ....Epilogue

O my Lord, when that which there is repelling alights upon me,
And I find myself leaving this adobe
And become Your guest in a dark and lonely place,
Then make the host’s meal for his guest the removal of my wrongs.
A guest is always honored at the hands of a generous host,
And You are the Generous, the Creator, the Originator.
Surely kings, as a way of displaying their magnanimity
Free their servants who have grown old in their service.
And I have grown old in Your service,
So free my soul from the Fire

part of Imam Shafie's 'Diwan'

ONE OF THE ESSENTIAL QUALITIES OF THOSE WHO UPHOLD and advocate God's truth is full awareness and knowledge of whom they represent and work for. The motives and aims of those who are working to establish God's order and way of life on earth are totally different from those whose selfish aims are worldly gain and enjoyment. Knowing this we can therefore appreciate why God so urge the Prophet to press ahead with explaining the fundamentals of His  mission, in the reassurance that He has power and control over all things.

Seest thou not how Allah sendeth down water from the sky and then the earth becometh green upon the morrow? Lo! Allah is Subtile, Aware. (63) Unto Him belongeth all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Lo! Allah, He verily is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise. (64)

The surah goes no to draw attention to the power and glory of God and the marvels of His creation, pointing out that He alone deserves to be glorified, served, and worshiped by everything and everyone in this world. " Hast thou not known that Allah knoweth all that is in the heaven and the earth? Lo! it is in a record. Lo! that is easy for Allah. (70) And they worship instead of Allah that for which He hath sent down no warrant, and that whereof they have no knowledge. For evil-doers there is no helper." (71)

God addresses the Prophet:

Unto each nation have We given sacred rites which they are to perform; so let them not dispute with thee of the matter, but summon thou unto thy Lord. Lo! thou indeed followest right guidance. (67)

The Hajj. as a fundamental obligatory religious duty, is a good case in point. When the Muslims were first directed to perform it, the Prophet instructed them on how to do so, saying: "Take your Hajj rituals from me." He showed them what they were required to do and how they were to do it, and he also explained the significance of the rituals, thus establishing the Hajj as an ordered and precisely timed and coordinated event composed of a set of actions and undertakings that translate the principle of tawhid into practise.

An important ritual during the Hajj  is the slaughter of animals on the tenth day of the month of Dhu'lhijjah, to which the surah refers: "Their flesh and their blood reach not Allah, but the devotion from you reacheth Him. Thus have We made them subject unto you that ye may magnify Allah that He hath guided you. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the good "(37). The Hajj is a perfect manifestation of Islamic values based  on equality and lack of discrimination between people. Accordingly, the Prophet denied the tribe of Quraysh any special privilege or concessions in performing the hajj, such as taking an exclusive route from Arafah to Mina. The surah says: "' And if they wrangle with thee, say: Allah is best aware of what ye do. ' "(68)

Another manifestation of tawhid is given in the example of creation in the animal kingdom:

O mankind! A similitude is coined, so pay ye heed to it: Lo! those on whom ye call beside Allah will never create a fly though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly took something from them, they could not rescue it from it. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought! (73)

The surah closes with a statement expressing the essence of the overall task of the world's Muslim community. This task was handed down from God to the Prophet, who faithfully passed it on to the Muslims, who then assumed the responsibility of passing it on to the rest of mankind. Thus the Prophet stands witness to the Muslims, and they in turn stand witness to everyone else. Nations and communities strive for ethnic supremacy, material progress, or domination. The Islamic nation carries the awesome responsibility of up-holding God's universal order and advocating submission to Him. And, even though Muslims have been defeated and subjugated, and the whole world has for many centuries endured injustice and tyranny, Muslims are obliged to fight on and deliver humanity from evil and oppression.

O ye who believe! Bow down and prostrate yourselves, and worship your Lord, and do good, that haply ye may prosper. (77) And strive for Allah with the endeavour which is His right. He hath chosen you and hath not laid upon you in religion any hardship; the faith of your father Abraham (is yours). He hath named you Muslims of old time and in this (Scripture), that the messenger may be a witness against you, and that ye may be witnesses against mankind. So establish worship, pay the poor-due, and hold fast to Allah. He is your Protecting friend. A blessed Patron and a blessed Helper! (78)

If only the Muslims recognized and appreciate their real mission and responsibility !!

part of Imam Shafie's 'Diwan'

The perennial struggle between good and evil is complex and difficult to comprehend fully. Whenever an individual or a community undertake to promote the good and uphold it, they are bound to provoke hostility and opposition. Gradually the difference turn to fierce confrontation, draining the energies and resources of both sides. It is possible, for reasons known only to God Almighty Himself, that evil prevails causing mosques to be turned into museums, stables or warehouses. We have seen this happen in Spain, Turkey, the former Soviet Union, India, Bosnia Herzegovina, and many other parts of the world. Many Muslims have been slaughtered defending their mosques and other religious monuments.

No one knows what the future holds , but Muslims will have to continue to struggle on behalf of their religion and way of life, because divine justice will be done. The Quran reassures Prophet Muhammad, saying:

If they deny thee (Muhammad), even so the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, before thee, denied (Our messengers); (42) And the folk of Abraham and the folk of Lot; (43) (And) the dwellers in Midian. And Moses was denied; but I indulged the disbelievers a long while, then I seized them, and how (terrible) was My abhorrence! (44)

The surah cintinues in the same tone to establish that to God time is measured on a different scale. While some human generations suffer defeat, others triumph and enjoy supremacy. " And they will bid thee hasten on the Doom, and Allah faileth not His promise, but lo! a Day with Allah is as a thousand years of what ye reckon "(47).

A messenger's task is to deliver God's message clearly and fully, so that no one shall have an excuse for not being made aware of it.

Say: O mankind! I am only a plain warner unto you. (49) Those who believe and do good works, for them is pardon and a rich provision; (50) While those who strive to thwart Our revelations, such are rightful owners of the Fire. (51)

We learn fron the Qur'an that while God's messengers devote all their energies to establish the truth and defending it, there are other Satanic forces that work against them. Some people are unfortunate in that although they bprofess belief initially, they are later prevailed upon by inisdious forces to say: " ' He [ Muhammad ]would have led us far away from our gods if we had not been staunch to them.' They will know, when they behold the doom, who is more astray as to the road " (al-Furqan :42).

Elsewhere in the Qur'an, we read: "Thus have We appointed unto every prophet an adversary - devils of humankind and jinn who inspire in one another plausible discourse through guile. If thy Lord willed, they would not do so; so leave them alone with their devising "(al-An'am :112). In al-Hajj, we are told that these 'varnished falsehoods' are insinuations of Satan for:

Never sent We a messenger or a prophet before thee but when He recited (the message) Satan proposed (opposition) in respect of that which he recited thereof. But Allah abolisheth that which Satan proposeth. Then Allah establisheth His revelations. Allah is Knower, Wise; (52)

Satan's insinuations are effort made to obliterate and pervert the truth, keeping people ignorant of it. In every community there are hordes of people who will say and do the most outrageous and disgraceful things in order to distort the truth and confuse the masses about it. But the surah reassures us that God watches over His revelation and will protect it against such harmful and destructive activities. Satan's effort will only appear in the form of distortions, misinterpretations and fabrications which are introduced over time into God's messages, causing people to reject, mistrust and ridicule them. Be that as it may, the truth as advocated by God's prophets and messengers will be protected and its followers will ultimately prevail.

Surah al-Hajj , 22...On Iman and Kufr, Haqq and Batil

part of Imam Shafie's 'Diwan'

FOLLOWING THIS EXTENDED INTRODUCTION, the surah turns to describe man's long-standing conflict between belief [ iman ] and disbelief [ kufr ] ; between carrying the banner of truth [haqq ] and raising the banner of falsehood [ batil ]. There is no love lost between those who believe in God and those who deny His existence and sovereignty; reconciliation appears to be impossible. But, does this mean that conflict and bloodshed are inevitable? The answer must be in the negative. Believers are obliged to reason and argue with non-believers and show them the truth. In this task, they are bound by constraints of wisdom, mutual respect, and reasonable argument, for both camp are equally under probation. If people refuse to accept it today they must be given another chance to consider, and must in all circumstances be treated fairly and without coercion.

It was this patient approach which brought victory to Prophet Muhammad. Opponents of Islam may possess the material power to hurt Muslims, but their arguments are shaky. They have always been  effort to silence or suppress God's messengers because they speak the truth, and the truth has its own power behind it. In another surah, the Qur'an says:

And those who disbelieved said unto their messengers: Verily we will drive you out from our land, unless ye return to our religion. Then their Lord inspired them, (saying): Verily we shall destroy the wrong-doers,  And verily We shall make you to dwell in the land after them. This is for him who feareth My Majesty and feareth My warning. (Ibrahim: 13-14)

Surah al-Hajj , 22...On Trials and Tribulations, Hell and Heaven

Recitation by Shaykh Muhammad al-Luhaidan
ayat 1- ayat 24

THE SURAH GOES ON TO TALK about disbelief [ kufr ], saying: "And among mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah without knowledge or guidance or a scripture giving light, (8) Turning away in pride to beguile (men) from the way of Allah. For him in this world is ignominy, and on the Day of Resurrection We make him taste the doom of burning "(9). In persisting to deny God's existence, unbelievers are contradicting their human nature and challenging the revelation sent down by God. The outcome of this attitude is bound to be appalling. Ther are also people who link their belief in God to what befalls them here in this life; that is, if they are prosperous and happy they believe, if not, they rebel. The surah puts it thus:

And among mankind is he who worshippeth Allah upon a narrow marge so that if good befalleth him he is content therewith, but if a trial befalleth him, he falleth away utterly. He loseth both the world and the Hereafter. That is the sheer loss. (11)

This life is a term for testing, trials, and tribulation, during which man is free to choose and decide the direction he wishes to take in life. He meets with good as well as bad fortune, and his ability to cope with both is put the test. To simply shrug off one's responsibilities and explain away these trials and ordeals as 'predetermined' and therefore 'pointless'  would be foolish and disgraceful. The essence of Islam  is submission to
God and total acceptance  of His will, whether good or bad. Success lies in the recognition of God's will; otherwise, man is welcome to challenge that will and see how far he can go.

Whoso is wont to think (through envy) that Allah will not give him (Muhammad) victory in the world and the Hereafter (and is enraged at the thought of his victory), let him stretch a rope up to the roof (of his dwelling), and let him hang himself. Then let him see whether his strategy dispelleth that whereat he rageth!. (15)

All matters shall be settled before God, who is equitable and fair, to whom all humankind shall return.

Lo! those who believe (this revelation), and those who are Jews, and the Sabaeans and the Christians and the Magians and the idolaters - Lo! Allah will decide between them on the Day of Resurrection. Lo! Allah is Witness over all things. (17)

Surah al-Hajj [ The Hajj ], 22...Prologue

Recitation of whole surah al-Hajj, by Shaykh Abdul Rahman al-Sudais,

THIS SURAH OPENS with an emotional appeal, highlighting the terrifying aspects of the Day of Judgement, designed to shock humans and shake their consciousness.

O mankind! Fear your Lord. Lo! the earthquake of the Hour (of Doom) is a tremendous thing. (1) On the day when ye behold it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling and every pregnant one will be delivered of her burden, and thou (Muhammad) wilt see mankind as drunken, yet they will not be drunken, but the Doom of Allah will be strong (upon them). (2)

We learn from the Prophet that the advent of the Day of Judgement will be accompanied by tremendous cataclysmic disturbances such as volcanic eruptions when the earth will be gripped in the throes of death.

This initial shocking appeal is followed immediately by a rather sober and rational one:

O mankind! if ye are in doubt concerning the Resurrection, then lo! We have created you from dust, then from a drop of seed, then from a clot, then from a little lump of flesh shapely and shapeless, that We may make (it) clear for you. And We cause what We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed time, and afterward We bring you forth as infants, then (give you growth) that ye attain your full strength. And among you there is he who dieth (young), and among you there is he who is brought back to the most abject time of life, so that, after knowledge, he knoweth naught..... (5)

Skepticism over the resurrection  is a direct outcome of ignorance and lack of understanding of how life came into being. Skeptics tend to believe that resurrection is a completely isolated event, bearing no relationship to the whole cycle of creation and life on earth. We see life and life -forms being created every second, which should tell us that a second life-cycle or a new creation of the same life -form is plausible, and indeed, possible.

This lead us to ask: Who is responsible for the creation of the male sperm? Under what power does this sperm develop and find its way to the female egg to produce a fetus, carrying all the vital genetic information that will shape its future and eventually develop it into a fully formed human being? How is this creature able to leave its mother's womb and adapt almost immediately to the new environment outside where, for the first time, its lung have to breathe in air and its eyes have to cope with powerful light rays?Who has endowed human beings with these amazing genetic features and inherent capabilities?

The creation of life is not a freak accident, brought about by blind chance or by some obscure laws of probability. It is a phenomenon that has been occurring an infinite number of times, in an infinite number of ways, over an incredibly long period of time. The surah turns to yet another marvel of creation

.....And thou (Muhammad) seest the earth barren, but when We send down water thereon, it doth thrill and swell and put forth every lovely kind (of growth). (5)

This again leads us to ask: how does all this come about? How can we observe this revival taking place before our very eyes and yet fail to accept that life can be resurrected? Out of the dead soil grow crops and plants providing staple foods for animals and humans, containing starch, sugars, fats, salts, minerals, and vitamins, all of which constitute the very essential elements for sustaining life. We are bound to enquire about the power that lies behind all this. These phenomena are indisputable. Since we believe what we can see and observe, we ought not to doubt that the dead can be brought back to life again. The surah gives the only logical explanation:

That is because Allah, He is the Truth and Lo! He quickeneth the dead, and Lo! He is Able to do all things; (6) And because the Hour will come, there is no doubt thereof; and because Allah will raise those who are in the graves. (7)

A great number of people accept these facts by intuition and common sense, but there are also  a great number who reject them, believing that life is an act of blind chance and death is the end of everything. It would be also wrong to give any credence to this notion, and it would also be wrong to accept the false belief that most philosophers and scientists are agnostics or unbelievers. In fact, many studies have shown the opposite to be the case. Rejection of God's existence, though widespread, does not stand upon sound scientific grounds. It often stems from sheer ignorance, arrogance, or defective and bogus ideologies. The attitude of Ibless or Satan, is a case in point: he rebelled against God precisely because he recognized HIS existence !
