i was in gay paris with my mrs, attending a cardiological conference.

took a short break to go 'shopping' for some branded bow ties and a couple of ysl shirts at 316, rue saint honore.
met wawi, [ we did housemanship same year in ghkl in 1978 ], and her husband, the then minister of education in the same store..

they were in paris for some unesco things.

she carried the same small shopping  basket as my wife....and noticeably with less shirts in there! 
our ringgit malaysia was already shrinking against the franc, even then!

across the english channel around the same time, harrod of london opened up late evening just specially for madame of the then minister of defence.
madame was on a shopping spree!

he was on a 'look & see' trip, 'chopping' for  a couple of submarines for the country.

i like to push the envelope wider and wider all the time.
this has been a 'bad' habit of mine.
to get beyond the comfort zone, and enjoy it's moments.
i know some of you guys are 'allergic' to terms like tarekat, sufi , whirling dervish etc and etc.

be in the rain and enjoy been soaked wet!

let us get beyond our usual nasi goreng and nasi lemak; beyond our favourite ustaz azhar idrus 's querrels with the young mufti from wang kelian, dr rozmi ramlie or ustaz rasul dahri etc and etc

let us  just go and have a short peep into the world of sham tabrizi, rumi and shems friedlander, and see how the rest of the muslim world , past and present, fare.

forget the incesant  and tedious argumentations about bida'ah, ablution and whether bismillah shoud be 'sirr' or 'jarr' etc and etc for a short while....

today let us get beyond hadith and tafseer and join shems friedlander, author, film maker, lover and student of rumi, sufi adherrent, and above all muslim.

let us listen to his short discourse on rumi....a very much maligned poet within the arab and the muslim world today.
he is an afghan, who spoke persian and lived his whole life in turkey...a 7th century 'saint'....a very international chap!

you may not have to agree with rumi.
you may even dislike him.
but there is big world there who love him
most of them not yet muslim.
some, on the brink of being muslim.

with surah al muzammil, the 4th surah to be revealed to our nabi[pbuh],we have several choice here. 
we can remain with prof quraish shihab or shaykh tawfique chowdhury or even listen to ustad nouman ali khan or shamsuri......all 'run of the mill' tafseer, with a high degree of 'political correctness'.

but i want to be a wee bit provocative today. 
we listen to shaykh abu talha.
his commentary is original and 'no hold barred'.

i love his take on surah al fatihah which we did at the start of our long , wonderful journey  weaving thru the qur'an from al fatihah, thru to juz amma and then on to al baqarah  and thereafter..
we started in sept 2012 and insyaallah by end of march we should qatam our tafseer masterclass when we reach surah abasa.


shaykh abu talha has been labelled many thing by his detractors, .....a return to 'qutbism' etc and etc.
this is of course scandalous game of labelling.
just listen to him and then make up your mind.


put yourselves in the shoes of our nabi[pbuh]
bear in mind when nabi had this surah, it was only the 4th surah handed to him..ie after iqra'. followed by surah al mudhatir and surah al qalam.

not much of qur'an as yet revealed to our nabi [pbuh] up to that point.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! (1) Keep vigil the night long, save a little - (2) A half thereof, or abate a little thereof (3) Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure, (4) For we shall charge thee with a word of weight. (5) Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain. (6) Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business. (7) So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion - (8) Lord of the East and the West; there is no God save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender - (9) And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. before we move on to surah al muzammil let us make a brief stopover at a pesantren in downtown jakarta....have a peep at up and coming ustaz, ustaz adi adiyat and also ustad abdul somad.

ustaz adiyat had his early education in several pesantren in indonesia and after his degree in islamic study locally , later went on to libya to study under several luminous figures there.

let us pick his 'brain' and wisdom on several issues pertaining to asma al husna, solat hajat and istigfar.

these constitute  'ranting' and 'branch' issues in the ugama along with issues such as maulid, 'talkin', tahlil etc etc and etc, but take prominence in our bumi malaysia due to our relative overall ignorance in our ugama and also the bludgeoning number of graduates from the nedj peninsula and also jordan who are more schooled in the fundamentalist approach to the ugama.
these people choose to go around with blinkers and wanted  the rest to follow them as well

the great majority of our ustaz however come from the pondok- indian subcontinent route and later in their education got 'washed' up in the azhari school in egypt.

they constitute the mainstream and are in control of jakim etc etc and etc., the controlling body of 'ugama' administration in the country. they are generally older and thus less internet savvy, but their leverage over the ummah are the suraus, masjid and madrasah. 
jakim controls all these.
..................

i choose ustaz adi adiyat here because he was initially from the pesantren, then joined the salafiyah schools in jakarta  and later went on to libya to polish off his education.
thus he has a balance view of the issues involved.

we close off with ustaz as somad, also of indonesia whom i like for his wise attitude towards branch issues in our din, or what we term as 'benda2 khalifiah ulama'.
ustaz somad is of the sunni-maturidi-shafei--azhari school and it is interesting how he gauge ustaz adi adiyat, despite their obvious difference in  orientation.

follow his short discourse as well on jemaah tabligh whom the rest of the daawah flocks generally looks down and consider lower in the 'animal scale of things'.

in life we can of course go around with blinkers  and join the 'wahabis' if we choose to, i call them 'school prefects'.

but  personally i 'condong' towards the 'lovers'
life is much sweeter and kinder. ..to wake in the wee hours of the morning and whisper 'sweet nothings' day in and day out when the rest of the world are sleeping, all the rules and regulation of the ugama you may know, but to push you forward you need 'love'.
the 'wahabis' ore generally not 'professors of love', in my humble estimation.
at best they are overglorified 'school prefects' who are able to commit to memory a few hundred more selected hadiths of their choice over socalled 'morons like me and you'

beside this, i do not enjoy going thru life saying, "this is bidaah, that is bidaah and that my friend is also bidaaah".
i love to hear dr maza the mufti from wang kelian a lot  but he and his men are overdoing the 'bidaah ' thing.

Surah Nuh, 71.............Shaykh Tawfique Chowdhury

it must have been 5 pm plus or there about, 4th january.
i was on a firefly, atr 72-500 twin turbo-prop aircraft flight to beautiful terengganu, despite a weather report  earlier warning of cyclone pabuk hitting the state that day.

'we are landing shortly, put back up your table, and straighten your seat...'

after a long choppy 15 minutes, and this part of teganung just over kenyir is always turbulent, i could just  see the runaway coming up....and my favourite nasi kerabu breakfast makan place near the end of the terengganu airport western side of the runway  coming into view.

this is 2 days post umrah.
i was still in continuous zikr mode irrespective of the time.
i stopped my usual 'tasbih, tahlil and tahmid' for a while and start  dreaming of  having 3 days of bliss at 'the sanctuary', my pantai telaga papan beach pondok. 

i need that 3 days of respite to rest my aching body , before serious work at the hospital back in KL. 
the last 11 days of umrah has surely taken it's toll!
an aching back from spinal stenosis due to years of abuse from horse back riding, a bad catarrhal cough from bronchitis and a brain and muscles full of virus......

" oops, i am sorry we cannot land...we will try another one. ', came the young pilot's voice over the intercom.
i assumed there must be a strong whiff of crosswind that must have pushed the small aircraft off course at the last minute. 
visibility was otherwise good . 
i  knew that landing standard operating procedures dictates all pilot to abort landing if at 500 feet, the runway could not be seen visibly.
it was impossible he could not see the runway. 
the green roof of nasi kerabu mak cik gemok  at batu rakit i could see!


'it must a strong whiff of wind ', i reassured myself.

after a long further 20 minute of circling the airport we still could not land!
the cabin was dead quiet. 
malaysians, especially the malay terengganu crowd are not particularly expressive.

i had a foreboding sense of panic by now.
i was still in ' full  tahlil, tahmid and tasbih' mode  continuously. i dont know about the rest.
the long one with even 'lau haula wala kuwatta illa billa hilaliyyul azim' thrown in.

the pilot this time took a long route towards phillipines. i could see the outline of pulau redang on my left, being left far behind, then he turned the plane back to KT.
I felt a sense of panic.
the cabin still very quiet.
could even hear a pin drop!

" mashaalah!...do we have enough fuel? this economy air carriers usually carry just enough to land only twice!! ", played into my mind.

" do we have enough fuel!?.....do we have enough fuel?''

the light aircraft was definitely dropping in height  all the time.
"full instrumental landing ", i assumed myself,but we were in the cloud for a good 5 minutes, i think perhaps longer. 
nothing to be seen except the white fluffiness of the cloud and water vapour.

" omg! omg!", i changed gear.
no more the long tasbih, tahlil and tahmid but  just 'astagfirullah hal azim astagfirullah hal azim
astagfirullah hal azim....'

still in the cloud , more than 5 minutes now already!
still dropping!

it is time for panic now,  another gear change,''la ila haillallah, laila haillah, la ila haillallah....''..

" this is it! ", i told myself.
must be ready for a sea landing and an 'instant maggi mee' delight for the barracudas of teganung. 

''omg....can death be this easy!? "

and just then i saw choppy blue water of the sea....then the beginning of the eastern side of the terengganu runway.

al hamdullillah! what a flight!
occasionally situation like this is healthy to the soul!

when life is just a collection of breaths, one always has to be in constant remembrance.
mashaaallah!


today we start on surah nuh with shaykh tawfique chowdhury.
it is certainly nice to be alive and still able to whisper things to allah!

there is a well known hadith as narrated by abu hurairah radiallahuan alluding to nabi [ pbuh ] as saying,

..a person is damned if every time he mentions me he does not send selawat to me.
..a person is damned if every time ramadan passes, he is still not forgiven.
..a person is damned if he has elderly parents and both of them could not carry him to jannah.

ustaz dr ismail lotfi al patani here softly discusses ayat 23, 24 and 25 of surah al isra' on our relationship and interactions with our parents, especially with elderly parents, an issue neglected today, in this fast moving world.

i have lost 2 precious doors to jannah because both my parents died early.
my only recompense is this short doa here...

"rabbir firli waliwa lidayya...." [ nuh, 28 ]
my lord, forgive me and my parents.

this short doa, which i read during my sujud and duduk antara dua sujud, al most always for the last 34 years, was given to me by shaykh al banjari, a malay alim teaching in masjidil haram, in the early 80's in the haram.

we have these kind of alim given tauliah teaching in the haram that time in bahasa.
not at the present time.
this short doa  is my only connection to them now.

sedeqah, done in their name, is the other avenue.

these are 'doors to jannah' open to us guys!

so they have finally forced the king to resign!!
omg!!

and they think replacing an ineffective one with a highly confrontational and a recalcitrant one would serve the  institution's interest better.

tdm ,with the aggrieved raayats at large all behind him, with popular rating all the way from timbuktu to solomon island sky high, will not  take too kindly to being incessantly insulted by still wet in between the ears young punk of a sounding board from down south.

there is currently too many problems on tdm's plate....

the issue of succession is still undecided.
the country is not yet greece but almost there.
the ecrl agreement with china, which entails a massive penalty payment for non delivery, is not yet ironed out with big bully, china.
etc. etc and etc.
having to deal with royal houses wanting to make big bucks here and there is the least of his problem...

tdm does not need the endless whining from  down south  to add to his headache!

en passant, queen's defence and sicilian defence all are aggressive opening moves in chess.
the old man is a consumate 'chess player'.

i hope he will not be moved too much to a corner  by whoever is the new player, whoever he is, that he will have to contemplate to do the unthinkable.



in my humble opinion, this move forcing the young king to resign  by his peers at this juncture is counterproductive and an ill advised one!

Surah al Ma'arij, 70................

friends, dato and tansri,

i just came back from mohd bin sultan's future heirloom, kingdom of two holy mosques just now with the usual body ache , general malaise, [ not malays please ! ] and debility, fever and cough. this visist this time came with ahefty price of 2k rm per head!......just for visa

at the ka'abah and raudhah, i could see all around me a sea of brown, yellow and black with very little red and white.

why the americas and europe are still either totally godless or moving around like lost sheep ascribing varying level of divinity to nabi isa and his mum, sayyeditina maryam,could well be explained in the main partly, by the fact that, we, practitioners of the faith
are ourselves fairly lost in limbo.
we, in general, from the bottommost, to the elites of the elites, have not shown the 'akhlak' that typifies one as being muslim.

we are not supreme examples for the 'ugama'!

with clowns like mbs, etc etc and etc and i would not name names here as i will get into trouble locally, why are we surprised?!

surah al maa'rij, a mid makkan surah, however has very distinct dichotomy about it all.

you guys are either with ME or with them .
if you are  not with ME, I will fill hell with all you guys to be its fuel and 'kayu api'!
and MY hell is for eternity.
