Surah al-Mu'minun [ The Believers ], 23...Universal Message

THOSE LOCALIZED MISSIONS were completed with the revelation of God's universal and final message to Muhammad. The Book he received, the Qur'an, was addressed to the inhabitants of the Arabian peninsula, as it was revealed in their language, but its message was universal and intended for the whole of mankind. The Arabs had initially refused to accept Islam and rejected Muhammad despite their knowledge of his integrity and honesty. The surah refers to this by saying:

Have they not pondered the Word, or hath that come unto them which came not unto their fathers of old? (68) Or know they not their messenger, and so reject him? (69) Or say they: There is a madness in him? Nay, but he bringeth them the Truth; and most of them are haters of the Truth. (70)

However, the price of their arrogance was high. Those who opposed Islam suffered  a humiliating defeat at Badr in 624 AC, and their leaders were humbled forever. The surah says: "Till when We grasp their luxurious ones with the punishment, behold! they supplicate. "(64)

The non-believing Arabs used all means at their disposal to try suppress Islam and undermine its veracity, growth, and influence, yet they failed to do so. The surah tells us: " Or say they: There is a madness in him? Nay, but he bringeth them the Truth; and most of them are haters of the Truth. (70) And if the Truth had followed their desires, verily the heavens and the earth and whosoever is therein had been corrupted. Nay, We have brought them their Reminder, but from their Reminder they now turn away."(71)
