Surah Al Imran , 3 : 156 - 200

Excerpt from ' A Thematic Commentary On The Quran ',
Shaykh Muhammad al-Ghazali [ 1917 -1996 ]

Following this extensive coverage of the surah's two main subject, it closes with two verses. The first talks about the people of the Book and the stance expected of them towards Prophet Muhammad. It says:

And lo! of the People of the Scripture there are some who believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto you and that which was revealed unto them, humbling themselves before Allah. They purchase not a trifling gain at the price of the revelations of Allah. Verily their reward is with their Lord. Lo! Allah is swift to take account. (199)

This verse, as we can see, extends to the Jews and the Christians as an open invitation, that is there  for posterity, to heed the call of the Prophet of Islam and accept the message he delivered on behalf of God to all humankind.

The second verse, and the closing one in the surah, is addressed to the Muslims. " O ye who believe! Endure, outdo all others in endurance, be ready, and observe your duty to Allah, in order that ye may succeed." (200).

This is a directive addressed to those who believed in Muhammad and followed him to hold fast to that message he delivered and with which God had honored them. They are expected to show a much higher degree of steadfastness than their predecessors in upholding it, and to vigorously defend it, its followers and their lands at all times. They are not to give any leeway to their enemies to overwhelm or dominate them, as witnessed over the last century or so when European colonialism swept over Muslim lands and controlled  the lives and destinies of hundreds of millions of Muslims for decades. It is a call addressed to Muslims everywhere and of every generation, and it is up to every one of us to respond to it.

Surah Al Imran , 3 : 81 - 120

Prologue :

In this dunia akhirzaman we do have ' new animals ' cropping up from time to time.
Beyond the 'liberal islamists' we have more cleverer and astute people, who should know better: the perinnealists , a new animal no doubt.
In this new age of political correctness in the west, this new group,
with a credo that 'at the highest level, all the great religions on earth are basically the same and one'.
Proponent of these new credo are diverse from many religious background. Prominent Muslims amongst them 'are' Frijouf Schoun, Rene Guenon, Martin Ling , and Hoessien Nasr.
A cogent and timely reminder to us all mere mortals that the 'great whisperer' works at all level of scholarship and none of us are immune from him.
We can only just pray for their souls.........
allahua'lam

" O ye who believe! If ye obey a party of those who have received the Scripture they will make you disbelievers after your belief.  How can ye disbelieve, when Allah's revelations are recited unto you, and His messenger is in your midst? He who holdeth fast to Allah, he indeed is guided unto a right path.  O ye who believe! Observe your duty to Allah with right observance, and die not save as those who have surrendered (unto Him)  And hold fast, all of you together, to the cable of Allah, and do not separate. Surah Al Imran, 3 : 33 - 80

your highness,

In this segment of surah al Imran God went on a 30 ayat spree on the next 'muslims', the Christians.
[ in surah al baqarah, He concentrate on the earlier Muslims, the Jews ]

He started with mention of the family of Imran [ blessed Mary's grandpa]; The story of  old Zachariah with his barren wife, later blessed with Yahya aka  John the Baptist;
and the miraculous birth of Jesus aka Isa alaihisalam[ pbuh].

In ayat 60 HE fast forward to year nine post hijrah when a group of Christian scholars and priests visited nabi Muhammad [pbuh] at Masjid Nabawi.
Even then  nabi Muhammad and the Christians from Najran were trying to find a 'common word' but could'nt
Now , more  than 14 and the half centuries later we present day Muslims and the Christians still could not find a 'common word'  to share.

two monolith of immense proportion still at each others throat. one, has lost all sense of bearing , knotted in circles on the concept of trinity, the other, still lost and has not yet being able to restore it's confidence and glory after being butchered and ravaged by 'hyenas and wild dogs' of the west came post world war 1 and 2.

but the damage to the former was more than cosmetic: it was irreparable.
Paul and the Romans at the Council of Nicea in 200 something ac, changed the ugama beyond recognition!
From being monotheistic, the Christians have chosen the nebulous concept of three godhead in one and one in three, The Holy Trinity
From just being Prophet Isa , the messenger, had been elevated to God-head., by men [ and women ] who put political and personal expediency above truth.

And this sad state of affair may happen to Islam in the future if the 'liberal islamists' have their way.
Islam may not be a trinity.
it would not come to that.......but it may not be recognizable by the sahabat if they were to be alive.

These 'animals called the 'liberal islamists' is a motley group of characters no doubt
Most are just purely ignorant nominal Muslims.
The top few are commited  and highly educated in the secular way but, alas, misguided.

Of those 'self' educated in the religion, not a small group just want the Qur'an alone.
of the cuff i can mention kassim ahmad and his disciples

Some others, cherry picking from the hadiths and the Qur'an
A  rarefied few, with high academic phd's from the West,  and very readily apologetic  and subservient towards them, have permanent  'head  damage' [ phd ] to the point that  they divide the qur'an into two halves. The Makkan ayats and surah, to them, can be wholesomely accepted as they deal with broad principles and universal guidelines . It is rather convenient as these universal principles do not seem to have a frontal collision with the West.  The  Madinan surah  and ayat however are full of specific advisory and guidelines such as  hudud. To them anything that go against the grain of Westren thoughts and liberalism will need to be rescrutinized and reexamined.  Such is the permanent head damage in this rarefied and highly academicall inspired group.Their magic word  and 'wand' of sort ' is term as 'contextualization'.

off the cuff people like tariq ramadan and jasser auda come mind.

To my humble mind the problem is not with the codification of the law but rather the new 'ulama's spirit is sadly  'not there' yet , let alone the ignorant masses, and  in most cases,  the political elite groups they serve.

...these 'new animals' , ignorant or misguided , share the same denominator. They seem to enjoy a lot of applause and accolade from a public that are looking for a convenient way out of having to have a' total indivisible submission to Allah, the rabbil alamin.

In short, wither the 'new Muslims'.

Say: Obey Allah and the messenger. But if they turn away, lo! Allah loveth not the disbelievers (in His guidance). (32) Lo! Allah preferred Adam and Noah and the Family of Abraham and the Family of 'Imran above (all His) creatures. (33) They were descendants one of another. Allah is Hearer, Knower. (34) (Remember) when the wife of 'Imran said: My Lord! I have vowed unto Thee that which is in my belly as a consecrated (offering). Accept it from me. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the Knower! (35) And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered - the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast. (36) And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will. (37) Then Zachariah prayed unto his Lord and said: My Lord! Bestow upon me of Thy bounty goodly offspring. Lo! Thou art the Hearer of Prayer. (38) And the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary: Allah giveth thee glad tidings of (a son whose name is) John, (who cometh) to confirm a word from Allah lordly, chaste, a prophet of the righteous. (39) He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when age hath overtaken me already and my wife is barren?

Surah Al Imran , 3.....An Overview

Surah al- Imran  [ House of Imran ]
[ ayat 1 - ayat 32 ]

IT IS EASY TO IDENTIFY immediately the whole subject matter of this surah. It revolves around two major issues: The debate with the People of the Book, the Jews and the Christians, of whom the Jews were Madinah natives incited to oppose the message that nabi brought with him. Secondly the tragic muslim loss at the battle of Uhud. The two issues are treated separately to begin with, but halfway through the surah they are  brought together and discussed as almost one subject. The outcome of the whole discussion seems to focus on the fact that  preseverance and steadfastness are required to face both issues; the scheming of the Jewish establishment inside Madinah and the attacks by the infidels from outside it.

Islam is a religion addressed to all human societies without coercion or discrimination. Whoever responds positively is taken into the fold, while those who turn away are left in peace. However-as mentioned earlier- those who commit aggression against Islam and the Muslims are boldly confronted. This is clear from the verse:

And if they argue with thee, (O Muhammad), say: I have surrendered my purpose to Allah and (so have) those who follow me. And say unto those who have received the Scripture and those who read not: Have ye (too) surrendered? If they surrender, then truly they are rightly guided, and if they turn away, then it is thy duty only to convey the message (unto them). Allah is Seer of (His) bondmen. (20)

The surah begins by stressing that Islam is a universal guidance, and the Quran a confirmation of all previous revelation. God's revelation is one, in the sense that it sets the truth apart from falsehood in a sharp and unequivocal manner. The surah highlights the fact that Mosses, Jesus and Muhammad have trodden the same path, and that the scope of Islam encompass all other revealed religions regardless of their time and place. The Torah and the Gospel are both referred to here as " God's revelation [ or message ]. " This phrase occurs ten times in the surah, as in verse 4 which says "  Aforetime, for a guidance to mankind; and hath revealed the Criterion of right and wrong. Lo! those who disbelieve the revelations of Allah, theirs will be a heavy doom. Allah is Mighty, Able to Requite (the wrong)." (4) , and the verse 199 towards the end of the surah:

And lo! of the People of the Scripture there are some who believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto you and that which was revealed unto them, humbling themselves before Allah. They purchase not a trifling gain at the price of the revelations of Allah. Verily their reward is with their Lord. Lo! Allah is swift to take account. (199)
