it must have been late 1990 or probably early 1991.
i was in gay paris with my mrs, attending a cardiological conference.

took a short break to go 'shopping' for some branded bow ties and a couple of ysl shirts at 316, rue saint honore.
met wawi, [ we did housemanship same year in ghkl in 1978 ], and her husband, the then minister of education in the same store..

they were in paris for some unesco things.

she carried the same small shopping  basket as my wife....and noticeably with less shirts in there! 
our ringgit malaysia was already shrinking against the franc, even then!

across the english channel around the same time, harrod of london opened up late evening just specially for madame of the then minister of defence.
madame was on a shopping spree!

he was on a 'look & see' trip, 'chopping' for  a couple of submarines for the country.
2 decades later he was numero uno..... 

Before We Move On To Surah al Qiyama, 75........Will The Real Rumi Stand Up Please!

friends, dato and tanseri,

i like to push the envelope wider and wider all the time.
this has been a 'bad' habit of mine.
to get beyond the comfort zone, and enjoy it's moments.
i know some of you guys are 'allergic' to terms like tarekat, sufi , whirling dervish etc and etc.

be in the rain and enjoy been soaked wet!

let us get beyond our usual nasi goreng and nasi lemak; beyond our favourite ustaz azhar idrus 's querrels with the young mufti from wang kelian, dr rozmi ramlie or ustaz rasul dahri etc and etc

let us  just go and have a short peep into the world of sham tabrizi, rumi and shems friedlander, and see how the rest of the muslim world , past and present, fare.

forget the incesant  and tedious argumentations about bida'ah, ablution and whether bismillah shoud be 'sirr' or 'jarr' etc and etc for a short while....

today let us get beyond hadith and tafseer and join shems friedlander, author, film maker, lover and student of rumi, sufi adherrent, and above all muslim.

let us listen to his short discourse on rumi....a very much maligned poet within the arab and the muslim world today.
he is an afghan, who spoke persian and lived his whole life in turkey...a 7th century 'saint'....a very international chap!

you may not have to agree with rumi.
you may even dislike him.
but there is big world there who love him
most of them not yet muslim.
some, on the brink of being muslim.
